A Great University of Kansas Tradition

Any KU student knows, or at least should, that our basketball program is one of the most heritage-rich in the country.  From James Naismith to Phog Allen to Wilt Chamberlain to Roy Williams, the names live on eternally on Mount Oread.  Here is a quick glimpse of this wonderful tradition, with pictures taken from the KU vs. Pittsburgh St. game on Dec. 11, 1999.

The Fieldhouse
Phog

This is the great Allen Fieldhouse where the Jayhawks work their magic.  Granted it could use some structural work.  It's named after Phog Allen, portrayed in the statue at right, who followed James Naismith as coach of the KU team for more than 20 years, leading it to a national championship in 1952.  Below is current coach Roy Williams on the sidelines.  Roy has 3 letters.  God has 3 letters.  Coincidence?

Below, the team takes the court supported by a Fieldhouse audience on its feet.  And don't you just love the dancing nachos on the scoreboard?  Below that, the team finishes warm-ups while cheered on by the spirit squad and our Jayhawk mascots.

Finally, our junior center Eric Chenowith steps up to the free throw line.  Let's hope Eric can find some stability and guide the team to the Final Four (I can dream, can't I?
