Life as a Funeral Home Grunt |
For my summer job in 2001 I volunteered to go to work for Rick Harrison, Justin's dad who is a funeral director in Beloit. No, I didn't have to prepare anyone for burial. I mainly did yard work, washed cars, cleaned up inside, whatever odd jobs needed to be done. Here are a few pictures for my out-of-town friends that haven't seen the place and anyone who has ever actually desired a glimpse inside a funeral home. Fair warning, some people might consider a couple of these pics a bit creepy. Don't bother me though. |
Right: The front of the funeral home and a glimpse of my fine yard maintenance. The second floor of the home is an apartment that an employee currently lives in. My bossman lives in the white house next to the home. Yeah, I mow both yards, of course. Below left: Here it is, the preparation, aka enbalming room. Not so bad, is it? Below right: Obviously, the room where all the varieties of caskets a customer can order are kept. In 4th grade Justin locked Josh in this room. Meanie. |
Below left: The two parking lots that I started calling the "back 40" for no particular reason. There's more grass to mow around the edges than it appears in the picture, and by the time I got this far I was really ready to quit. Below right: Well I cleaned out this garage once, then filled it back up with stuff from the basement of the funeral home. I also filled up about two rooms in Rick's house with more stuff from the funersl home. If there's one thing I've learned from this job is that I swear never in my life will iI accumulate so much crap. |
All Work and No Play... |
Because I have no other place to put them, here are a few pictures from a Collective Soul concert in Wichita that Amber and I attended. We got there before the gates opened and our reward was standing room in the 2nd row (no, these pictures aren't zoomed). |
Right: Guitarist Roth Childress jams out, guitarist/vocalist Ed Roland visible at right. Below left: Better shot of Ed. I think this was taken while they were performing Run, the first encore. Below right: Post-concert, Amber shows off her T-shirt and guitar pick that she managed to convinced a security guy to give to her (whoever in the band threw it apparently didn't have a strong enough arm).
