My Third Annual Pitch Tournament

Originally thought up as an excuse to have a birthday party, I now intend to keep having a pitch tournament every summer as long as I can find eight people to come.  For those of you who don't know (shame on you), pitch is an intense, competitive card game played two vs. two.  Here are some highlights from the 2000 edition of the tournament, to prove it indeed does exist.

Every year the party begins with a BBQ dinner, and every year I make my specialty dessert, Kansas Dirt Cake.  This year I recruited Sarah into helping me.  I think she's having just a bit too much fun smashing the Oreos...
Below left: Nick hides behind his cards.  As him and partner Geoff were often at odds, I'm not surprised he's afraid to show his face.  (Possibly concealing scars.)
Below: Nick and Geoff take on Kylene and Rachel for the right to avoid getting last place and the dreaded booby prize.  Who won?  You'll find out soon enough...

Sarah (mostly hiding behind Diana) and I face off against Diana and Julie in the championship match.  It was a well-fought game, and alas only one team could win.  Unfortunately, it wasn't us.
Below:  Rachel and Kylene ended up in last, with a 1-3 record.  Their reward?  Pez dispensers, of course.  Nick and Geoff finished third with a 2-2 record.
Below right:  Also with a 2-2 record (both losses suffered at the hands of Diana and Julie, Sarah and I finished second.

And here are your champs, Diana and Julie, finishing with a 3-1 record.  My mom actually got nice prizes this year, fold-up chairs.  I actually got one for my birthday so I guess it's good I didn't get another one (at least, that's what I like to tell myself).
