andy's otakon2k page: saturday's con report
Woke up late on Saturday so, I missed the Drawing with Ian Kim panel so, I went to the Bandai Panel. Interesting discussion was had (along with some not so great announcements concerning the Escaflowne dub on FOX Kids). Got a ticket for the Escaflowne movie, hung around taking more pics and then went to eat at the Burger King across the street (yeah, I know BK is not the best place to eat a hearty meal but, it was cheap and close to the con!)
After that, I went to the Escaflowne movie (with a really good seat). The movie was untranslated but, I was able to understand a good chunk of it. As I understood it (and don't worry, no spoilers), it retells the story with a different twist and a "new" bad guy. And for those who have been saying that since Escaflowne will be airing on FOX Kids, the movie will also be brought to TV, I hate to disappoint you but, there is NO WAY in a million years that they can show this movie on TV without censoring it to oblivion [sarcasm]we could warp the young lads' fragile little minds and turn them into psycopaths by exposing them to such violence![/sarcasm]
After the Escaflowne movie, had to stand in line for the Masquerade. It was 2 and a half hours before the Masquerade even started and there was a HUGE line already so, I had to get in line or risk getting an incredibly crappy seat. While in line, took pics of more cosplayers. Anyway, we got seated and it turns out that we were going to be a few rows back from the Otakon staffer that was going to be taking the video!! And he was a big dude! So I asked permission from the cosplay chair to sit on the side with my camera and we were in business!!
Anyway, the Masquerade wasn't that bad and it was kept moving along fairly well. A few technical difficulties here and there but nothing major. It seems like "The Chair" was an Otakon favorite this year (where was the chair thingie started? AX99?). They even had to give it an award to appease the crowd!! Anyway, I couldn't stick around for the music video winners since I had to go check out the Cyber Team in Akihabara movie.
We headed for the Akihabara Dennou Gumi movie and we got a little surprise! Sakurai Hiroaki-sama (director of the Akihabara movie and the DigiCharat series) had his little guitar and performed the song that Kamome-chan sings while she's selling her takoyaki (I call it the "Takoyaki" song ^^;;). He even did an encore!! It was great. Anyway, the movie was untranslated but it was cute and funny. I don't think many people there had seen the show before since there wasn't much of a reaction from the crowd (I guess the fact that it was raw didn't help much ^^;;)
After that, I stuck around and went to the Otakon Game Show, a Jeopardy-style game show with an anime twist. I knew the answers to some of the questions but, there were some answers so obscure, that only hardcore fans of the shows in question would have known them. After that, I headed back to the room to begin packing a little and make sleeping arrangements. For reasons that shall not be discussed here ^^;; I didn't get to sleep until around 4:00am ...
