Physical Therapy Methods Used to Treat and Manage Cerebral Palsy

Physical Therapy is perhaps the most common treatment for cerebral palsy. PT is aimed at strengthening and stretching muscles and preventing spasticity as well as increasing muscle control.

The following methods have recently been developed as part of or in addition to tradition physical therapy. Used in all types of cerebral palsy.


Feldenkrais Movement Method

A newer method of movement therapy that is practiced by some physical therapists that has a different approach than traditional PT. To learn more see feldenkrais. Used in all types of cerebral palsy.


TES & TENS & other forms of Estem

Threshold/Functional Electrical Stimulation, is used in addition to traditional treatment methods and may be used during therapy sessions or while the patient sleeps. Used primary in spastic cerebral palsy. May also be used in pain control.
