Speech &
Communication Tips for people with CP
Many
people with cerebral palsy have some speech impairment. Speech is a very
important ability to have in today’s information driven society. Thus,
here are some tips for people with speech impairments. Remember just because
we do things differently doesn’t mean they can’t be done.
FOR THE PHONE
- If you have a
speech impairment which causes you to be misunderstood often consider
using a telecommunications device for the deaf. These devices are more
commonly known as TDDs.
GENERAL COMMUNICATION
- Try to use e-mail
as much as possible. You can now contact most companies via e-mail.
Many offer customer support via e-mail or their web site.
SHOPPING
AND IN PUBLIC
- If you were planning
on ordering something from a catalog then see if the catalog has online
ordering.
- For shopping the
old-fashioned way or for in public in general consider using a portable
speech device, which makes communication easier.
- Have someone you
know go with you on errands and outings.
- Go out with a group
of people that you know and that know you.
