Guns!

I've become increasingly concerned about the media's blatant promotion of gun control laws. The TV show ER constantly contains story lines bashing the viewer over the head with their bias. I have heard Bill Maher of Politically Incorrect (don't even get me started on the absurdity of that title) state on his show that "the American people ARE for gun control laws, it's just the politicians who are holding us back" (paraphrase). Unfortunately, with so much of the public being confronted by such unobjective and misleading statements (which come from very few but carry great weight in such forums), I believe a great deal of Americans are being convinced. Although Dr. William James isn't someone I would normally quote, he was right when he said, "There is nothing so absurd but if you repeat it often enough people will believe it."

Obviously, I am against gun control laws. I don't think I need to qualify that statement but I will say for the record that I don't think we should let just anyone buy and carry just any gun. I will also state, for the record, that I consider being a registered gun owner a patriotic gesture.

I don't need to go into the important facts now, because, although it was a few years ago, my mother wrote an excellent summary here: Facts On Gun Control (outside link). This was not written before the gun control movement was mainstream, and I think it still carries a lot of weight. However, in light of more recent events, let me ask a few questions and make a few of my own comments.

  • The freedom to carry arms must have meant a great deal to our founding fathers. Read the constitution, if you haven't already.

  • Why is the mass media and public entertainment allowed to openly promote the left-wing agenda when any hint of right-wing beliefs are instantly attacked as "intolerant" and "biased"? (Okay, so that doesn't just apply to this... not in the least, unfortunately.)

  • Why aren't the pilots on major airlines allowed to carry guns (as they have been asking for so long)? A great number of the pilots are military veterans, and they are the last line of defense during any hijacking in the air. If these pilots are entrusted with the safety of hundreds of people, why not let them do their job completely?
