Air Mauritius falls! Pressure on BAA plc continues.

There was fantastic news in the Guardian this weekend when it was confirmed that Air Mauritius no longer carry primates for vivisection. This is a great victory for the Gateway to Hell campaign and shows that no one is beyond our reach. This wonderful achievement damages greatly the international trade and will directly save animals from the vivisection labs. We can feel proud that we have achieved through our protests where talking so often fails. There are more targets to defeat before we can finally put an end to the sickening international trade, but this week we can reassure ourselves in all honesty that the end is in sight.

It also emerged that British Airways has tightened their stance on carrying laboratory animals, specifically stating in its operations manual that they are not to be carried at all. So congratulations must go out to them, as well as to Virgin Airways and BMI who also state that they do not carry lab animals.

These are fundamental victories for everyone campaigning against vivisection. No animals means no sickening and vile experiments, such as those carried out by the colleagues of Colin Blakemore who removed the eyes of monkey foetuses and then experimented on them once they were born. Even mentioning such experiments makes us sick to the core and that is before we even go into the details. But this is why we are so determined that no animal will ever fly from paradise to a life of hell.

So congratulations to everyone for persuading Air Mauritius to see sense, and take heart that we are winning. But let'??s not forget the fact that only a few weeks ago we learned that 50 primates passed through Heathrow airport destined to spend the rest of their life being tortured. Heathrow is owned by BAA plc who have the power to say no, despite what they say in their letters. The demand is simple - no more lab animals to be flown through their airports.

BAA has a Freephone number: 0800 692 2004.

Covance have been caught abusing animals and breaking the law yet again. One
of PeTA's undercover investigators has been working as a primate technician
in the toxicology department of Covance's Virginia lab in the USA for 11
months. She was able to film Covance staff abusing monkeys in truly horrific
ways.

The full details of the investigation can be seen at:

http://www.covancecruelty.com
http://www.covancecampaign.com
http://www.tierbefreier.de

The investigator witnessed and filmed the following behaviour:

- Physical violence against the primates by Covance technicians
- Verbal and psychological abuse of the primates by Covance technicians
- Failure to provide prompt and appropriate veterinary care
- Failure to provide appropriate euthanasia
- Animals known to be unhealthy used in new studies
- Failure to use less painful methods to conduct ECGs
- Failure to properly train and supervise employees
- Painful and stressful procedures performed in full view of other primates
(conspecifics)
- Failure to provide environmental enrichment
- Soaked primates left in cages after hoses were used on them during
cleaning

This kind of behaviour has already been filmed in Covance's lab in Germany
and now the same thing has been found in the USA. What a disgusting company!

Don't forget there will be a mass demonstration at Covance's UK site in
Harrogate tomorrow morning. Watch the video footage, get angry and join the
demonstration tomorrow. If you are too far away to join the main demo then
please go out and protest at your nearest Covance Campaign target.

When: Wednesday 18th May, 11am - 6pm.
Where: Covance Laboratories, Beckwith Knowle Office Park, Otley Road,
Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG3 1PY.

Campaign Against Vivisection Animal Transport Launched

On Sunday 23 January 2005, at the Animal Rights Coalition meeting in Nottingham, the
Gateway To Hell campaign was launched.

The aim of this campaign is to bring about an end to the transport of
animals to vivisection laboratories from the airports and ferry ports of
Britain. Whether guinea pigs from Newchurch being flown out to labs around
the world from Manchester to the primates coming through Dover and
Heathrow, this vicious trade will be stopped.

This is not yet another vivisection campaign. It is a campaign which
supports and compliments all existing campaigns - whether against HLS,
Oxford University, Sequani or Covance. It will also affect the many other
labs currently not been targeted. All these labs and universities need
animals brought in from abroad, in particular primates. It is our
intention to break this trade and thus knock out a major strut supporting
the entire vivisection industry. After all they are going to find it very
hard to experiment on animals if they cant get their hands on them in the
first place.

The vivisectors are going to be forced to look at alternatives as we
remove their access to primates and other animals. This in intended as a
blow against vivisection itself. Given the nature of this trade we
anticipate that this campaign will be beneficial to other non-vivisection
campaigns where the importing of animals in horrific conditions is an
issue, such as in the exotic pet trade. Information passed to us has shown
that the demand for animals by UK labs is not being met as it is, and
prices have risen as a result. Every victory will push those prices
higher, and out of reach of many vivisectors, especially in the
Universities. The profits of labs such as HLS and Wickham will also be
further chiselled away.

The first targets are the airport owners who facilitate this trade taking
place on their property. They are BAA who own Heathrow, Stansted,
Southampton, Gatwick, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, and
Manchester Airport. We will also be looking at other places.

We are calling on all animal rights protestors who want to stop this evil
trade to campaign against these companies until they give a statement that
they will no longer allow primates, dogs, cats and other animals destined
for the vivisection laboratories to come through their airports. It is
very simple - get some free merchandise from us (see below for our
details; leaflets, posters, etc available), jump in a car and get down to
the airports and get your message across. There is plenty of scope and
opportunity to be very effective here.

If you cant make it, then check out the emails, telephone numbers, faxes
and addresses which can be found on our website at www.gatewaytohell.net

Gateway To Hell is a coalition of grassroots activists with the support of
the grassroot anti-vivisection groups and other campaigns. World Day in
the UK this year will also be held under the Gateway To Hell banner. It is
the first step in what is hoped will develop into a global campaign aimed
at ending the entire trade in primate and other laboratory animals.

On Friday November 12th 2004 an article appeared in the 'Times' newspaper, entitled, "Oxford inquiry on abuse of monkey". The news item told how Thames Valley Police had investigated an allegation of abuse to a monkey inside one of Oxford uninversity's animal labs. The report that followed showed only too clearly exactly what the life of a laboratory animal means to those abusing it and those supposedly charged with it's welfare.

We are constantly told by Oxford University and all those who claim to be involved in the 'care' or 'use' of lab animals that the animals are well cared for and that they are shown respect or more tellingly that "no animal is made to suffer". Some vivisectors use terms like "our animals have the life of Riley" or "it causes them no pain or stress", this language is designed to paint a picture that is a long way from the disturbing reality. The report in the 'Times' states that the university vet wanted this paticular monkey "put out of it's misery" after it was realised this creature was suffering unnecessarily. The university refused this initial request on the grounds that the monkey was an asset. This individual creature is stripped of any recognition of it's ability to feel pain, distress or fear because as far as the university vivisectors are concerned it is merely an asset much the same way as the laboratory bench is or any other inanimate object in the lab. This animal and all the others inside Oxford University's vivisection labs have been reduced to mere tools in the academic mind set and this recent expose only serves to show just how divorced the minds of the vivisectors are from the suffering they inflict daily on sentient feeling animals and what the animals housed in the new laboratory can expect at the hands of Oxford University vivisectors.

Please help us to stop this project once and for all. Click on the link below and sign the petition, then forward it to friends and relatives and ask them to do the same. Let us show Oxford University that they cannot hide their barbarism from us and that compassionate people from around the world are demanding they stop their outdated practices immediately.

WHAT'S WRONG with McDonalds?

McDonald's spend over $2 billion every year worldwide on advertising and promotions, trying to cultivate an image of being a "caring" and "green" company that is also a fun place to eat. Children are lured in-dragging their parents behind them-with the promise of toys and other gimmicks. But behind the smiling face of Ronald Mcdonald lies the reality: McDonald's only interest is money, making profits from whoever and whatever they can, just like all multinationals. The company's sales are now $40 billion a year. The continual worldwide expansion of fast food chains means more uniformity, less choice and the undermining of local communities.

PROMOTING UNHEALTHY FOOD.

McDonald's promote their food as "nutrisious", but the reality is that it is processed junk food-high in fat, sugar and salt, and low in fibre and vitamins. A diet of this type is linked with a greater risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other diseases. Their food also contains many chemical additives, some of which may cause ill-health, and hyperactivity in children. Modern intensive farming and production methods are geared to maximising profits. As a result , the widespread use of unnatural practices and chemicals has also affected people's health (e.g.BSE and food poisoning).

EXPLOITING WORKERS.

Workers in the fast food industry are paid low wages. McDonald's do not pay overtime rates even when employees work very long hours.Pressure to keep profits high and wage costs low results in understaffing, so staff have to work harder and faster. As a consequence, accidents (particularly burns) are common. The majority of employees are people who have few job options and so have no alternative to being bossed around and exploited-and they're compelled to "smile"too!.Not surprisingly staff turnover at Mcdonals's is high, making it virtually impossible to unionise and fight for a better deal. This suits McDonlad's who have always been opposed to workers' rights and Unions. The same is true for workers toiling in sweatshops in China to produce Mcdonald's "happy meal" toys.

ROBBING THE POOR

The demands made by multinationals for cheap food supplies result in the exploitation of agricultural workers throughout the world.vast areas of land in poor countires are used for crash crops or for cattle ranching, or to grow grain to feed animals to be eaten in the West. This is at the expense of local food needs. McDonlad's continually promote meat products, encouraging people to eat meat more often, which wastes more and more food resources. 7 Million tons of grain fed to livestock produces only 1 million tons of meat and by-products. On a plant-based diet and with land shared fairly, almost every region could be self-sufficient in food.

DAMAGING THE ENVIRONMENT

Forests throughout the world-vital for all life-are being destroyed at an appalling rate by multinational companies. McDonald's have at last been forced to admit to using beef reared on ex-rainforest land, preventing its regeneration. Also, the use of farmland by multinationals and their suppliers forces local people to move on to other areas and cut down further trees.

McDonald's are the world's largest user of beef. Methane emitted by cattle reared for the beef industry ia a major contibutor to the "global warming" crisis. the heavy use of chemicals in modern agriculture destroys wildlife, plants and the soil. Every year McDonald's use over a million tons of unnnecessary plastic and paper packaging, the production of which requires environmentally-damaging chemicals and degradation of forests. Most of the packaging ends up littering our streets or polluting the land buried in landfill sites.

CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

The menus of the burger chains are based on the torture and murder of millions of animals. Most are intensively farmed, with no access to fresh air and sunshine, and no freedom of movement. their short lives are cruel and their deaths are barbaric-"humane slaughter"is a myth. we have the choice to eat meat or not, but the billions of animals slaughtered for food each year have NO choice at all.

WHAT YOU CAN DO.

Food is central to our everyday lives, yet we have virtually no control over its production and distribution. The way we eat, and even the way we think about food is being manipulated by these powerful institutions and their sophisticated marketing campaigns. But despite strenuous marketing efforts, McDonald's is widely despised, and its "reputation"-along with that of the food industry in general-continues to sink even further.

Every year on 16 October there is an annual World Day of Action against Mcdonald's and all they stand for-with pickets and demonstrations all over the world. Together we can fight back against the institutions which currently control our lives and our planet, and we can create a better society without exploitation or oppression. Workers can and do organise together to fight for their rights and dignity. People are increasingly aware of the need to think seriously about the food we and our children eat. Environmental and animal rights protests and campaigns are growing everywhere. People in poor countries are organising themselves to stand up to multinationals and banks which dominate the world's economy. Why not join in the struggle for a better world? talk to friends and family, neighbours and workmates about these issues.

NEW PRISONER: ANDREW DAVIES:
Please write letters of support to Andrew Davies, a tireless animal rights campaigner who has been imprisoned for objecting to the animal abuse of David Hall and Partners. This was an unexpected custodial sentence and Andrew would sincerely appreciate your letters of support. Shocked as he was he at the severity of the sentence (essentially for having an argument with Simon Turner on the validity of animal experimentation on World Day) he is in good spirits and awaits your letters.

Violent whip handle attacks on hunt saboteurs
Date 7 February 2004

Hunt saboteurs were attacked with whip handles in two separate incidents at
hunts today. One involved the whole mounted field, whilst the other
happened as terriermen tried to dig out a fox.

2 hunt saboteurs had to receive hospital treatment today after being
attacked at a meet of the Essex Foxhounds at Nether Hall, Essex. One was
taken to Harlow hospital where he received 4 stitches to a head wound and
another had bumps and bruising to his head examined.
The protestors state that they were attacked with whip handles when they
tried to prevent members of the hunt from digging out a fox that had sought
refuge in an earth.

Meanwhile at the Dartmoor Hunt, saboteurs have reported that the entire
mounted field attacked sabs less than an hour after the meet, held at
Delmore House, Cornwood. One of the sabs was struck repeatedly around the
head with the handle of a whip resulting in large bruises. His hand was
also damaged when he tried to protect his head. A 17 year-old saboteur was
picked up by two riders and dragged down the road. A female saboteur was
dragged along by her hair. The incident happened on public access land.
When protestors made a complaint to the police, they failed to take action
against the violent hunt members, but threatened they would arrest
protestors for causing a breach of the peace if they went back on the moor.

Commenting on the violence and police behaviour, Hunt Saboteurs Association
spokesperson said, "These attacks show the true violent side of hunting.
The incident on Dartmoor illustrates the bias hunt saboteurs suffer from the
police. The police will permit hunters to commit acts of serious public
disorder and then use minor aspects of the law to curtail our legitimate
right to save animals' lives."

At the Hampshire Hunt near Basingstoke on the same day, a hunt horse
collapsed and died in a field. It is not just foxes, hares and stags that
are casualties of hunting.

One of our supporters has sent us a cutting from the Isle of Thanet Gazette,
which states that Carol Peters Coach Travel is organising a trip to the dogs
at Sittingbourne greyhound stadium on Feb 15th.

Please contact the company to protest - but do be polite, as they are very
likely unaware of what happens to greyhounds at the hands of the dog racing
industry.

Tell them about the suffering and slaughter caused to the dogs (more info at
http://www.greyhoundaction.co.uk if you need it) and ask them to please cancel
their trip to the greyhound races and not to organise any similar outings in
the future. If you have any personal negative experiences of greyhound
racing (e.g. if you have a dog that's suffered at the hands of the
industry), write about that too.
As the company doesn't have internet access, please give them written
information, rather than just referring them to our website.

This is a long article but is invaluable for the

Help stop Bristol greyhound track!
The two professional football clubs in Bristol (Bristol City and Bristol
Rovers) are considering plans to build a new 30,000-seater football, rugby,
athletics and greyhound stadium near Easter Compton,
in partnership with greyhound track operator Gaming International.
We must do all we can to make sure that the greyhound track is removed from
the plans. A new dog track would create demand for the breeding of even more
greyhounds, most of whom would be put to death when no longer of use to the
racing industry.
Please write to the following people.(.address below)

Tell them about the suffering and slaughter caused by the greyhound racing industry
more info at:

and ask them to please oppose the construction of a greyhound track at the new stadium.

If you have anypersonal negative experiences of greyhound racing (e.g. if you have
a dog that's suffered at the hands of the industry), write about that too.
In your letters/messages to the political representatives for the area, you
could mention, in addition, that the anti-social behaviour (drunkenness,
rowdiness, fighting etc.) of many of those that attend greyhound racing is
much worse than that of football fans.
