castle on the shores of Loch Ness (the lake life fits!)
A question of geography...
The most helpful information we recieve from Rowling as to the where-about's of Hogwarts is in Book 2, when Harry and Ron go on a little car trip. They were seen in London (1) , Norfolk (to the north-east) (2) and final Peebles, Scotland (3) (near Edinburg). As they had to be flying in a slight arc to hit Norfolk, my guess is that Hogwarts is located somewhere to the north-west of Edinburgh. (See map for places).
People have by now realised (for the most part) that Hogwarts is in Scotland. But where? In a land full of castles and lakes, it could easily be anywhere. By some clues from the books, I've narrowed down the location....
Maps, one of Great Britain - see if you can follw Harry and Ron's path from London (1), up through the yellow (2) , to Edinburgh. Below is a close up of Norfolk (2), which they fly over (probably because Ron wasn't steering quite straight They also hit Peebles, Scotland (3). I belive that Hogwarts is located to the N-E of Edinburg (4)..

More beautiful lakes. After this, I'll picture Hogwarts and the surrounding area differently! Scotland is beautiful...

Hmm... another castle that resembles Hogwarts is Neuschwanstein, in Germany. Built on a mountain overlooking a great lake, it was built by "Mad King Ludwig" long after castles were needed. It even has it's own mystery to go with it... When I get around to it, I'll scan pictures I took of the scenery around the castle.
