Southern Literature Vernacular Unit
Description
The purpose of this unit was to encourage students to seek out information about the Southern culture that surrounds them. It was to raise awareness of the literature of the older South and to spark new connections with this generation. Students were introduced to a Southern Literature Unit based on the vernacular which is an oral form of literature passed down generation after generation. This lesson plan tied into the music unit because a lot of the literature used was either influenced by music or vice versa.

Southern Tradition: Grits
One of my Hispanic/Latino students and my Hmong students had never had grits before. So my 1st segment class wanted to share our tradition and bring in the soul food on a Monday.
We all ate and had a great time; I saw her mother later that day and gave her the recipe and I found out the next day the student had made grits for her mother that night. They enjoyed it thoroughly.
