In ancient jungles

they called us gods

named us nameless

and worshipped us

where we lay

enraptured in each other

uncaring of their

petty, worthless lives.

Through the centuries

they lay gifts

at our threshold

until one starless evening

they came no more

and even in our rapture

we felt an emptiness

for, gods dethroned,

we were but simply

lovers once more.
