Brief Biography

Phil Teertha Mistlberger was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1959. He was educated at John Abbott College and Concordia University, then left traditional academia in his early 20s to follow an intensive spiritual quest. His path led him through many lands, including journeys through Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and North America; and through many paths, including the Western esoteric tradition (Qabalah, astrology, tarot, sacred ritual, and high magic), yoga, The Gurdjieff Work, Primal Therapy and rebirthing, Advaita Vedanta, Zen, Theravadin and Tibetan Buddhism, shamanism, A Course In Miracles, and ten years as a disciple of the Indian mystic Osho. In 1988 he graduated from a transpersonal therapist's training program, and has worked as a transpersonal therapist since then. In 1993 along with Duane O'Kane he co-founded Clearmind Institute and was co-director for its first two years, and in 1994 he founded Shamballa Society (later Shamballa Trainings), a personal growth school and spiritual community that he ran until 2001. From 2002 to 2004 he taught Advaita Vedanta via weekly formal satsang meetings in Vancouver and in three locations in Washington state. Since 2005 he has traveled widely, teaching in Germany, Spain, Austria, England, New York City, Toronto, Ottawa, Fort McMurray, Calgary, and the Sunshine Coast of BC, as well as Vancouver.

He is currently co-founder and co-director of the School of Sacred Awakening, an international personal growth school. He is a transpersonal therapist, international groupleader, and spiritual teacher with two decades of experience working in depth with people. He has been interviewed on radio and TV, is the author of the book A Natural Awakening (2005), which deals mostly with Eastern spirituality, and is completing three others slated for publication in 2009-2010: The Sacred Work, which focuses primarily on the Western esoteric traditions; The Enlightenment Handbook, a compact and informal guide to the spiritual path; and The Three Dangerous Magi: Gurdjieff, Crowley, Osho.

Phil is currently busy teaching long-term programs in Vancouver, but is available for private phone sessions and weekend workshops in other cities. He can be contacted at pmistlberger@yahoo.com
