Lieza
is at first, the damsel in distress. That image of her actually
does not change much, but unlike many anime girls, she is not
annoying.
When we meet her, she is taken by Clive to be experimented on.
However, because of Elk's interference, she is saved by the boy,
and is
in his debt. Being blonde, timid and a bit vague, this may
already give you some prejudices against her, but as the series
unfolds, you start
to gain respect for this girl.
Lieza
grew up in the village of Horn. The village itself was special
because of the people who lived there. There were witches living
there,
and since they were afraid of prosecution (as one would be), they
hid themselves in that village. Lieza herself, has some special
powers.
One day, when she was looking after the sheep, she came across a
little wolf like monster with a bleeding wound. At first, the
monster
growled at her, but soon after, it fell quiet. Lieza healed the
pup, and happily took it home. However, when she arrived home,
her uncle told
her that she was not allowed to tell anyone about her little
monster, whom she named Pundit. She never realized why until the
story begins.
Some
years later, her village was attacked. The men in black began to
burn down the village and seemed to be searching for someone.
When Pundit jumped out in a mock attack, he was shot for his
efforts. Lieza then ran out, but was caught by the men. It seemed
that they
were searching for her because of her power with monsters. Her
gift from the spirits is to tame monsters that can never be
tamed. And
this power made her special, making her a perfect specimen for
the experiments with the Chimera. But that is not her only power.
When she
and Elk are stuck on the island after one of his stupid
endeavors, we discover that she has a healing powers.
After
she is kidnapped, she is then taken to Clive and the ship, and
that is when the story starts. Elk saves her from being taken by
the men
in black, and another time from the Hunters who are after Pundit.
After that, they stick together. But the relationship between the
two is more
one sided. It seems that Lieza has stronger feelings for her
companion than he does for her, but still, she will always stick
by him. She gets
pulled into his adventures because she wants to stand by him, and
nearly gets killed many times (but then so does Elk). Because Elk
has/
had the obsession with Merryl, Lieza was upset about that, but
when Elk went to save Merryl, Lieza still went along. Even though
he did
not feel for her the way she did for him, it did not matter. This
shows that she is always loyal to that moron, and this is
reinforced when she
talks to Kukuru (the priestess).
However,
amongst these adventures with Elk, Lieza is still being hunted
down by Clive and co. It is revealed that she is the perfect
specimen, not to be a Chimera, but something much much worse.
Clive wants her to be the next Seibo, "Goddess of
Peace". If you haven't
seen up to episode 13, then that may sound nice. But it ain't.
The Seibo is the one that gives birth to the Chimera eggs, and is
the mother of
the Chimera. Merryl was the first one, and she was experimented
on so much that she did not look human. And that is what they
want to do
to poor Lieza, perhaps because of her powers.
Let's
not forget Pundit. Pundit is Lieza's loyal companion and best
friend. They have been together since they were both little, and
Pundit
would always protect Lieza. Nevertheless, the monster does not
harm anyone, just keeps them at bay. He (it???) is a 'good
monster', and
protects and stands by the girl to the very end (much like Lieza
herself with Elk).
Lieza
is the more naive and innocent character who is picked on because
of things she can not help. Still, she is not all bitter and
filled with
hate like Elk, but sees the world in a happier light. She always
wants to help people when they are in need, keeps optimistic, and
extremely
loyal to Elk. Also, she knows her own limitations. Overall as you
have probably noticed, I like the character of Lieza. She keeps
silent and
does not bug the other characters, and is not susceptible to
Elk's hate. For those reasons, she is an all right anime girl.
