Bink of North Village has a problem- he is 25 and has not yet discovered his magical
talent, and he dreads the impending exile from his beloved Xanth. Determined to remain in
the country of his birth, Bink risks a journey to the Good Magician Humfrey, whose talent
is information, to find out if he does indeed have magic.
It's a long and dangerous voyage, but Bink finds help along the way: from the beautiful
but simple Wynne; from a woman named Iris, whose specialty is illusion; and from Crombie,
a wounded soldier who has the ability to sense danger. But when Bink finally gains
admittance to Humfrey's castle, the magician is confounded to realize he cannot discover
the nature of Bink's gift.
Yet Humfrey is convinced that Bink does have magic- that indeed it is as powerful as
any possessed by the King, by the Good Magician himself, even by the forces of evil that
threaten the peace of his becharmed homeland...

The King of Xanth sends Bink, accompanied by Crombie (now a griffin) and Chester the
Centaur, on a quest to discover the fountainhead of Xanth's magic. From the beginning,
they are harassed by an unseen enemy determined to thwart their mission.
Even Humfrey, who has also joined the expedition, does not have magic of sufficient
strength to protect them from their peril. And when they are overpowered by the brain
coral, the underwater guardian of the source of Xanth's magic, it seems as if all is
lost...
But no one could have anticipated Bink's next act...

Ogre, Ogre

 |
In the magical land of Xanth, the Magician Humfrey has all the Answers. Unfortunately,
he isn't always sure of the Questions. So the human girl Tandy is somewhat puzzled when
Humfrey tells her that the Answer she seeks will be discovered by traveling with Smash the
Ogre. Smash is even more perplexed. He didn't even have a Question, yet his Answer is the
cryptic order "to seek the Ancestral Ogres." And he must pay for the unsolicited
Answer by protecting Tandy on her quest.
The two mismatched companions set off on their assigned journey to find what they don't
even know they seek. But along the way, complication after complication arises: Smash,
after blundering into the clinging Eye Queue vines, acquires, mush to his shame,
intelligence and, worst of all, stops rhyming when he talks. And Tandy loses her soul in a
hypnogourd.
In exchange for its return, Smash must promise to replace it with another... or forfeit
his own!
Through the Goblin Lands and Birdland, into the regions of Air, Earth, and Fire, and
over the Gap Chasm, the two searchers range on their quest. But the dangers they face-
including the fierce and magical Gap Dragon, and the seductive traps of the mysterious
region known only as the Void- seem like nothing compared to the problem they must
eventually solve: how to save Smash's soul? For there is only one way out- to get the
great Night Stallion to nullify the deal. And he will not do so... unless they can defeat
him in battle.

Nightmare
|
 |
War is hovering at the gates of Xanth. The Nextwave of barbarian Mundane warriors is
invading from the North, ravaging and destroying as they advance. And the future of Xanth
is placed squarely in the hoofs of a horse, the Night Mare Imbri.
But Imbri has her own problems. In the land of Xanth, all bad dreams are caused by
Night Mares, creative little beasts who live in the world of the hypnogourds and emerge
only to carry frightening visions into the sleep of the inhabitants of Xanth. Imbri is a
Night Mare, but not a particularly successful one. Ever since she acquired half a soul
during the adventure recorded in Ogre, Ogre, she has been too kind-hearted to
really terrify anyone. Finally, she is summoned by the Night Stallion, the horse who rules
the World of Night.
"Imbrium," he tells her, "I am transferring you to day mare duty. A more
horrendous mare will assume your night duties." The thought of her clients being
placed in the power of one of the more brutal Night Mares pains Imbri deeply. But the
Stallion knows what he is doing. Because she possesses part of a soul, he informs her, she
is able to withstand the light of day, something the truly soulless Night Mares cannot do.
Though her special night powers will be inoperable in the light, Imbri is still uniquely
suited for a most important task: to deliver a message to King Trent at Castle Roogna.
"Beware the Horseman," it says.
Imbri has no idea what it means. But that is the way with prophetic warnings- nobody
can understand them until it's too late. Then she meets the Horseman, and she discovers
that one who would ride a Night Mare is a master of bit and spur and is not a man to
surrender her. And that the power of this Horseman is just a taste of the nightmare that
will come should his followers breach the defenses of Xanth!

There's trouble in Xanth. A dragon has been terrorizing the vicinity of Castle Zombie,
yet Good Magician Humfrey has issued dire warnings against harming it. And an
inexplicable, invisible wave of amnesia appears to be sweeping away the memories of
countless citizens.
This urgent state of affairs brings King Dor and Queen Irene, along with their
3-year-old daughter, Ivy, to Castle Zombie for an emergency conclave of Magicians.
Humfrey offers his colleagues some surprising and grim news: the rampaging beast is
none other than the Gap Dragon- whose survival is essential to Xanth's security. The
amnesia, he reveals, is the unfortunate result of miniature forget-whorls that have spun
off the Forget Spell.
Dor and Irene, deeply concerned for all of Xanth, are suddenly absorbed in another,
more personal dilemma. For a Zombie who has rescued Ivy from a dragon attack has stumbled
into a forget-whorl and can't remember where he left her!
Now the frantic Irene must search the wilds of Xanth and find Ivy before she's
discovered by one of the land's deadlier inhabitants. It is a search complicated by Ivy's
own magical talent, nobody is aware of- especially the young princess herself.

Ivy, the five-year-old sorceress, was tired of all the attention being paid to her new
baby brother and bored by the history of Xanth she was watching on the magic Tapestry. So
when Jordan the Ghost joined her, hoping to see his past, Ivy was eager to learn about his
life. Sadly, Jordan couldn't remember much, but he was sure the details would come back if
Ivy helped him with the Tapestry- and what the Tapestry revealed then was enough to make
Ivy forget her boredom and her little brother.
Four hundred years earlier, Jordan had been a hero in search of adventure- goblins to
fight, dragons to slay, maidens to rescue and so on. Then the rival twins Yin and Yang had
sent him on a dangerous Quest... a Quest to settle the succession of the kingdom once and
for all.
Mounted on the ghost horse Pook, Jordan had set out with a bag of magic spells to find something-
the twins were maddeningly vague about what. But it was a mission that would lead to many
strange perils, and end in a Cruel Lie from which even his unique talent could not save
him...

Grundy Golemn is small in stature and tired of being ignored. What he needs is a quest
and the chance to become a "larger than life" hero. And the perfect opportunity
comes along when Princess Ivy's pet dragon Stanley Steamer disappears.
Like any sensible hero, Grundy wants all the help he can get, so he seeks the advice of
the Good Magician Humfrey, who tells him that he must ride the Monster Under the Bed to
the Ivory Tower. Since all little girls have monsters living under their beds, Grundy
simply recruits Princess Ivy's own monster, Snortimer. But since light is fatal to
Snortimer, the bed must go too, and so must someone to carry the bed. Grundy's rescue
party rapidly grows until, finally, all are gathered and ready to set out. The only
trouble is, no one knows where to find the Ivory Tower.
What follows is an incredible, imaginative romp that takes Grundy and his comrades from
the Gap Dragoness to an encounter with the Sea Hag, and a series of daring rescues beyond
Grundy's most heroic dreams.

As far as nine-year-old Dolph, son of King Dor and Queen Irene of Castle Roogna, could
tell, the world was full of mysteries that needed solving.
For instance, why did young men and women spend so much time on mushy stuff? Love, they
said, which explained nothing as far as Dolph was concerned.
Then there was the matter of Grandma Iris and what happened to her wonderful talent for
illusion- making things seem like other things. Nowadays, she could only make them
sound like other things- an ability of dubious worth.
But the biggest mystery of all was Good Magician Humfrey's disappearance in a puff of
smoke- holy smoke- accidentally conjured by one of Humfrey's elves. And that seemed
like one puzzle the boy could do something about. So, setting out with the skeleton Marrow
Bones, his own magical talents- and his mother's permission- Dolph embarked upon a grand
quest across the land of Xanth... a journey on which the lad found himself pitted against
bloodthirsty harpies, human-headed snakes called Naga, and- most challenging of all-
marriage-minded girls who supplied some surprising answers to Dolph's questions.
