SABERHAVEN NEWS August 30, 2000

Topping the news is the Mayor's announcement of a mini-tournament to
fill in gaps in the top 50 competitors. Many have retired, moved on to
other realms, or just plain disappeared since the last tournament. Fans are
excited, even though many of the contestants are considered "second-tier".
Still, it will suffice for the faithful until the next Great Tourney.

There is still a lot of discontent with the Mayor's ban on Arena
gambling. After the sharp rise in arrests, the Mayor decided to simply ban
competitors from betting. Despite that the feud between the owner of the
Flying Dragn casino, Scourge the Undying, and Mayor Slonhauser continues
unabated, as evidenced by Scourge's pointed absence from the competition for
unclaimed rank spots.

Many new competitors and Contingencies are arriving from all over the
planes. Inns and hotels in the Arena district are booked to capacity, even
the Grand and the Pharoah are doing record business.

The city guard is celebrating their victory over Macross the Black, a
necromancer who had been causing much havoc within the city, kidnapping many
citizens (including some arena competitors!) and transforming them into
powerful undead creatures. Several buildings in the warehouse district were
destroyed in the final battle... contractors may submit bids to the city
Chancellor for reconstruction deals.

Fan favorite Noerdaxinanus has had a major life change... the popular
Gorillian warrior issued a press statement that he was now affiliated with
the contingency Lords of Entropy, and for some reason, has announced he is
no longer a Primation! Noerdinaxus has been reincarnated into a new body!
His many fans are very excited for his next fight, so they can see what
their favorite now looks like.

Many citizens are unhappy with what they perceive to be callous
attitudes on the part of city workers in the wake of the heat wave that has
afflicted Saberhaven for the last two weeks. Several elderly citizens have
expired due to the heat... a bill has been introduced which would mandate
taxpayer gold to be used to distribute ice to the poor. Mayor Slonhauser
has promised to veto if the bill passes the legislature.

To make up for lost revenue from the gambling tax, the Mayor has
proposed increasing income taxes. The faction led by Lord Willhert claims
this is unfair to the poor, and that a capital gains tax should be
instituted instead, which would "only affect the rich". The Mayor calls
Willhert an economic moron, but the captains tax is gaining support among
the citizenship.

A meteor struck ground not many miles from Saberhaven last week. Some
adventurers who have explored the site report strange properties of the
meteor, as well as unknown monsters and animals appearing in its vicinity.

The local Druid has been in Saberhaven recently, seeking to drum up
support for an expedition to "The Great Scar", the six-mile wide crater that
appeared last year in the Great Forest to the northwest of Saberhaven.
While individual adventurers have explored the Great Scar, the Druids are
concerned that it is becoming merely another "attraction", with little
attention paid towards reversing this great catastrophe.

A new citizen's group has been formed, called "A Better Arena". They
call for new types of matches involving group battles and battles against
powerful monsters such as dragons. They have recently gained the patronage
of a noble, in whose manor they meet. They are issuing press releases
regularly, trying to build support.

Citizens are reminded that, due to the upcoming Rose Parade, Black Magic
Avenue will be closed on the upcoming weekend.

Finally, congratulations to the Saberhaven High paddleball team, who
took the Galagos Cup Championship! The mayor is extremely proud of his
young citizens, who worked long and hard to earn first place! Signups for
next years team will begin next week, and in addition to the 12-16 year
bracket, there will be a new bracket for 9-11 year olds. Parents take note!
