On closer inspection, Mulder realized that this guy looked familiar. "That's right," the torn-garmented man replied, "I almost was where you are. I can carry a flashlight as well as you...maybe even better." And as he turned and left the partners, they heard him repeating to himself, "I coulda been a contenda."
