Having kept in touch all these years, Mulder and Scully immediately went to the aliens for advice. They were told that Edie needed to return to her homeworld. But Scully argued that she was their daughter no matter what her DNA said. The aliens would tell them nothing further and the agents began to question their memories and experiences. Had Scully really given birth to Edie?

Was the alien mind control still in progress and had none of the events even taken place? Pulling Scully into a hug, Mulder kissed the top of her hair and assured her that the things that mattered hadn't changed. They were still partners and friends and would always have each other. Looking at the hideous pattern of Mulder's tie, Scully nodded a silent agreement.
