The second Federation ship to bear the name Enterprise. It was a Constitution-class vessel, registry number NCC-1701-A(This is one of my favorite ships). Launched in 2286, the Enterprise-A was placed under the command of Captain James T. Kirk by the Federation Council and Starfleet Command in appreciation for Kirk's role in saving Earth from the Alien space probe(Star Trek 4). The ship was still under shake down tests and system installation when is was rushed into service in early 2287 to intervene in a hostage situation at Nimbus III. The ship under the command of Captain Kirk was pressed back into service to escort Klingon chancellor Gorkon to Earth for a peace conference. The Enterprise and her crew played a very important part in the success of the historic Khitomer conference. The Enterprise was scheduled to be decommissioned shortly after the Khitomer conference. We don't know if it was decommissioned or now since it was not confirmed in an episode or movie. There were many questions about how Starfleet was able to build the Enterprise-A so quickly. The answer is that Starfleet simply took the YorkTown and gave it a paint job and upgraded it.
