Cover Art Competition, 2003: Entry D by Michael Schuster

Comments:

Entry D is... well... very plain. There's an Andorian on the cover... uh... so what? I already know from the title that Andorians will be involved. The Andorian isn't doing anything dynamic, so I'm not really interested in what happens to him.

A clean look, but the Andorian seems a little crudely drawn.

Nice picture. It would work better as a painting, though. It looks too "hand-drawn."

That's about the ugliest Andorian I've ever seen!

This is horrible. What kind of expression is that? I hate the art. I do like the "Star Trek" font and how it fades, and the symbols on either side. That's cool. But the "Andor's Folly" font is cheesy here, too.

This is a tie between Entry D and Entry E. Entry D has that hazy old-school look to it, along with that lovely wallpaper, and I like to see Andorians, which also aren't shown nearly enough.

Entries D and E would tie for bottom for me. I don't know, they just really don't strike me as being... right. Entry D, while being a great portrait of an Andorian, just doesn't have anything happening in it. Seems to me like book covers have some sort of movement in them usually.

Could be more realistic.

Andorian Planetary Council:

Entry D shows an Andorian with ears... tsk, tsk! :-)

It was hard to choose between E and D for the number 2 spot. Consider them a tie if possible. This reminded me of a classic 70s TOS novel cover. Simple, nice font, elements are complementary and don't distract. Depiction of the Andorian grabs your attention. Can't tell if the borders on either side of the Andorian are supposed to be Andorian language or just decorative, but they're a nice element when you study the cover close-up. Excellent artwork. Probably the most well-crafted depiction of an Andorian in the bunch. I like clean, basic lay-outs. This one worked for me.

Ian's comments:

This one's probably a bit of overkill, especially when the word "Andorian" is already in the cover. But it's eye-catching nonetheless. I'm thinking this fellow might work better as a smaller image, perhaps in a two-shot with Spock, or in a three-shot with Spock and Uhura? I really do like the exotic Andorian(?) calligraphy running down the sides - and the costume and its colours are attractive and so Star Trek. I only recently noticed the long white "mullet" hairstyle, even though the cover came in two days earlier.
