Joel is Gale's new camera man/assistant sent to her by the station to cover the new murders that have just occurred. When he realizes that there are more killings to be had- Joel wants to get the hell outta there. he reads Gale's book The Woodsboro Murders and he doesn't want what happened to Kenny happen to him. Gale convinces him to stay--but Joel doesn't last for long at Windsor!

He gets the hella outta there after Randy gets killed in his news van. When Gale comes out of the court house the day Cotton was arrested and released (again) Joel informs Gale he is sorry-but he is going to get the fuck out of there! After some protesrt from Gale, he hops in a taxi cab and we don't see him again till after the whole sherade is over. He comes back and tells Gale that he'll be her camera man again and that he shouldn't have left in the first place.
