ROY'S LADY LOVES

The Ladies' Man Himself...
(terminally clueless)!
Artwork by Rik Mays

I've got to say it: I haven't been lucky at life, but I've sure been lucky where women are concerned! I know some of the most wonderful women alive. 'Course my daughter, Lian, is numero uno in my book; my "etai yazi" always comes first with me. And there are other fair maids who have been very good to me, like my pal Martin's wife, Erika Santos, who is tops with me too; she helped look after my little girl when I wasn't able to, just like nice Mrs. Estevez' did in Los Angeles. "Mamita" was almost like having a grandma for my baby; I'd like to think that my mother, were she around, would adore my daughter the way that sweet lady did.

DONNA TROY LONG:
It would be nice if every man treated the sweetest girl in his life like a princess, but I've been lucky enough to actually date one! Princess? Heck, Donna is a goddess! When I first met her, she was a giddy Amazon girl who was totally blown away with being surrounded by crazy boys who worshipped the ground she walked on. I was front and center in that pack of wolves, but I was the lucky one---she picked me to be with! Of course, I was a jerk and a cad, courtesy of my training from Ollie, and I still chased every other skirt that came my way. Donna took it all in stride; I guess she knew you can't do much to change a crazy little coyote like me. I really blew it with that girl last time; bet your bottom dollar, I'll never be that stupid again...or at least I'll give it my best shot!

DINAH LANCE:
As a motherless child, I grew up jealous of other kids on the reservation. I'd see their mothers hugging them, patching up their busted knees with love and compassion, combing and braiding their hair with precision and care...and I always hurt inside because I'd never known the like of it. When Ollie started dating Dinah Lance, I'll admit I was jealous; he already spent so much time away from home that I felt abandoned by him, and once Dinah entered his life it seemed he was never around at all. They became both life partners and heroic partners, and the team of The Green Arrow and Speedy pretty much ceased to exist. Imagine my surprise when she, along with The Green Lantern, kindly protected and aided me as I struggled through my self-imposed detox--cold turkey-style. Dinah offered me her home as a safe place to sleep and cleanse myself of my heroin addiction when my guardian, her boyfriend Ollie, had thrown me out into the street with nothing but the clothes on my back. She held my hand, nursed my wounded body and soul and was a kindly shoulder to cry on at the time in my life when I needed one most, and I'll never ever be able to repay her for what she's done for me. I treasure her friendship and I'll adore her eternally. She's not so much what I'd think of as a "mom"---agewise, she's more like a big sister, in a way---but if a mother is a woman who cares for you as if you were worth all the diamonds on Earth, that would describe Dinah's care for me.

JADE/CHESHIRE:
What can you say about the woman who is the mother of your child...when Interpol and half of the governments of the world want to put her on trial for crimes against humanity? Ummmm...well, it's not easy to separate my feelings for Jade from my hatred for Cheshire, her evil and insane alter ego. When I first met her, it was hard to believe such a lovely and beguiling woman could be the drug-trafficking assassin she was repudiated to be, but, of course, I already knew her true nature because I was sent to entrap her and use her to bust an international drug ring. She bowled me over with her charms; she was so beautiful and mysterious, with a strange vulnerability I never expected in one with such an unsavory reputation. It wasn't love; it was lust and hormones and loneliness...on both our parts. And from that unholy union came the most precious person in my life---my daughter, Lian.

When Cheshire poisoned me and left me for dead, she also ran off and left our daughter behind. Thank the Great Spirit that Nightwing was there to help my sorry butt and protect my little girl; he's truly the best friend anyone could ever have. What I'll tell Lian about her mother is beyond me at this point, though it's obvious that sooner or later she'll start to ask a lot of questions, especially since her most recent encounter with her mother. All I can say is..."Later! Please...later!"

Cheshire, In Her Glory

She's my love, my princess and the light of the stars in my eyes. If I've never done one other good thing in my misbegotten life, that one good act was giving the world a wonderful heroine for the next gerneration, for I know somehow that she's going to follow in the footsteps of all of these great heroes she's constantly around. According to Lian, she's also going to manage to fit in being a doctor, a ballerina and a forest ranger, too, just like her grandfather....errrrr, just the forest ranger bit from my dad, though! I'd do anything for my etai yazi (little girl, in Diné); she's makes me want to be the best that I can be, every day and in every way. She's the one I live for.
