BACKGROUND: In 2328, a man walked into the applicants office at Starfleet Headquarters and announced his intention to join, identifying himself by the name Raleigh. A quick background check revealed that the man was a colonist from Maige III, but that there was no record of his arrival on Earth. After submitting to a massive battery of tests and investigations, which resulted in nothing whatsoever, and passing the rigorous entry examinations with apparent ease, he was finally granted admission to the next year's entry, chiefly on the grounds that they had no possible reason to prevent it. In Raleigh's class were two other rather unusual cadets, a Vulcan called Yatoh Derch and a Gnalish Elt by the name of Gordall Kalln. In the latter half of 2330, during a routine antimatter experiment as part of the physical sciences course, a terrible accident resulted in a breach of one of the containers. An explosion was prevented by the heroic actions of Raleigh, who managed to seal the container but during the process received a fatal amount of radiation. Raleigh was posthumously awarded the Haunes Cross, the highest award given by the Starfeet Academy science department. The briefly mourning Derch and Kalln resumed their studies, but on the eve of the 23rd of November that year, a stranger entered their academy quarters, claiming to be Raleigh. Derch and Kalln were not young, green or stupid, and they put the man through a grilling interrogation before they finally came to the conclusion that he must be who he claimed to be. Raleigh related to them that the man they had known before was simply a host body, and that he was himself a free-floating entity, able to possess and control sentient beings. When this fact became public, a month-long legal proceeding finally resulted in Raleigh being allowed to continue his studies, provided that he never harm a sentient being through use of his powers. The body that he now controlled had died as a result of brain haemorrhage without intervention, and the previous colonist had been killed by toxins on his world. Of his origins Raleigh would say nothing, save that the colonist was the first being he had 'been inside' for a very great length of time. In 2335 Raleigh served as an Ensign with Derch and Kalln on the USS Enoch, before transferring away across a series of ships. Throughout his career Raleigh has suffered greatly from prejudice, and has been promoted only twice despite his exceptional abilities and performance. In 2362, however, he received the Metal of Valour and was made Assistant Science Officer for his part in saving the lives of the eight million people on the world of Nein XII. In 2365, on the world of Bryn, Raleigh learned how to synthesise new bodies for himself, and since then he has experimented with a variety of host forms. In 2374, Raleigh requested a transfer to the brand-new USS Casablanca, and received it. PERSONALITY PROFILE: Despite his utterly alien being, Raleigh has an identifiable psych profile. What is immediately apparent is his respect for life, comparable to the most Hippocratic of doctors. It is not so much that he is pacifistic; he believes that the war with the Dominion is preferable to being the subjects of conquest, but that he will go out of his way to prevent others from suffering or dying. On several occasions he has lost host bodies through the rigours of saving others lives, though he has always managed to emerge in another after a time. Little is known about his true form, though several of his closer shipmates have claimed to see him appear in his quarters as a thin black mist. In any event, he is intelligent, knowledgeable and wise beyond his apparent years (though rumours persist that he has existed for centuries, perhaps millenia, he has never discussed this). His physical abilities tend to vary by host body, but he can sustain far more damage to his form and exert effort exceeding a mortals capacity. This is due both to the complete control he has over his functions and also the improved biological forms that his later grown host bodies have taken. Recently, he seems to have started a bizarre practice of making the eyes of his hosts completely black. There is no record of him performing this feat earlier in his career, though it may be again something to do with the genetic construction of the hosts. SPECIAL NOTES: Raleigh currently maintains five distinct bodies. He (or she) is able to control any of them, but generally only one at a time. They can be left to perform simple functions on their own, and with a considerable amount of will Raleigh can control more than one at once, but he prefers not to do so as it is a great strain on his powers.
Raleigh's science specialisations are exozoology and the various social sciences, particularly focused on the area of human emotion. His reasons for this are unclear, but it has been theorised in the past that he subsists, like other creatures who have been encountered like him, on the emotions of the creatures around him. Raleigh, presumably, feeds on the more positive emotions because his behaviour encourages these and not the more negative emotions of hate, fear and such like. In his quarters, and the adjoining private laboratory, Raleigh has three distinct large pieces of equipment. The first is a multi-chambered facility, looking vaguely like a series of Borg regeneration alcoves, though lacking most of the pipey-lighty shenanigans. This is where the host bodies are left when not animated, and it can be quite a macabre sight for those who do not know Raleigh well. The second item is a large chamber, looking very much like a cryogenic capsule, which is the device used to generate, through a process of advanced replication, the bodies that he inhabits. The third piece of equipment is a small, cylindrical metal container, with homeostatic controls and an osmotic portal. This object is not fully understood, but on equipment manifests Raleigh lists it as a 'sleeping chamber'. CASABLANCA SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
