Ray Butts

McQueen: Bit of a bummer getting your butt kicked by a dead guy...

Wang: I'm waiting for my testicles... they should be dropping in any second...

Plot

Special Forces Colonel Ray Butts, an apparent loner and maverick marine, requisitions the 58th for a secret mission. After extensive training, the 58th realise during the operation that Butts is correcting a mistake he made on his last mission...

Personal Comments

Another episode exploring loyalty, leadership and respect as the 58th cope with a hot-headed, battle-hardened colonel seemingly incapable of looking out for his marines. A light-hearted contrast to the serious issues in Mutiny, but with some great insights into the character of Ray Butts. One of my favourite episodes, with some great moments.

The two quotes had to be done - they're both great lines. McQueen's witty remark follows the serious punch up on the flight deck - I wonder, did McQueen read Butts' name tag?

There's an AVI featuring Wang's post-HALO quote doing the rounds (I have a copy on a Zip disk somewhere...) - apparently this scene was cut from the original release. It was included on the BBC screenings - does anyone have any further information about different cuts of episodes?

Production Goofs

None that I can see. I did originally have a problem with the various colours in the paintball exercise, but after looking more carefully I realised I'd imagined the whole thing. Every time I look at it now I think "Why on earth did that look wrong to me?".

For those who are interested (or plain confused at this point), I kept track of the order of pellet colours and the shots fired, assuming the gun wasn't single-shot, and was a little confused that the colours weren't in any pattern and... Oh, look... I have way too much spare time on Saturday mornings! Actually, I'm a little confused as to why West got a blue pellet and everyone else had pink and green alternately - was Butts saving this special pellet just for West?
