A brief update to the list. I've been reading heavily but I'm afraid I've been tied up with other work and thus didn't get a chance to update the page with all the books. However, here's three more excellent books to get your teeth into... with more coming very soon, including Neal Stephenson's excellent "Cryptonomicon".
"The Demolished Man" - Alfred BesterHow do you commit murder when the police have telepaths who can detect your very thoughts? Alfred Bester's novel tackles the elaborate plan of Ben Reich, the ruthless and obsessed head of a large corporation, to kill his arch-rival and then evade the probing of the telepathic police. Almost poetic at times. Fans of Babylon 5 should read this, in particular, to see the huge influence this had on JMS' idea for the Psi Corps. |

"The Stars My Destination" - Alfred BesterA 50s science fiction classic that reads like a 90s cyberpunk novel. A fascinating tale centred around Foyle Gully, an initially unremarkable man who survived for almost 6 months in the darkness and isolation of a deep space wreck. A man possessing a unique physical mark, a grudge and a secret that could end up changing everything. |

"The Case For Mars" - Robert ZubrinNot a science fiction novel, but something that should be recommended reading for all. Zubrin presents a comprehensive proposal for getting to Mars within ten years, using existing technology and at very low cost - with the ability to keep on sending out missions at increasingly smaller cost indefinitely. The conquest and colonisation of space is something we should all be looking towards. |
