Book cover info
Under the brutal oppression of the Gothir, the Nadir tribes dream of the Uniter, the Great One, who will bring the tribes together, and end their centuries of torment.
But for one man it is more than a dream. Talisman, a mysterious and enigmatic Nadir warrior, rides out to the shrine of Oshikai Demonbane, seeking the legendary Eyes of Alchazzar, twin jewels of enormous power that will light the path to the Uniter. With him rides the beautiful Zhusai, a mysitc tormented by the ghost of a long dead Nadir queen.
But others desire the secrets of the jewels.
Garen-Tsen, the sadistic power behind the Gothir throne, believes the magical gems will lead him to glory, and sends the elite soldiers of the Gothir army to sack the shrine, and butcher the few defenders. They cannot lose: five thousand men against a handful of savages and a renegade Drenai warrior.
But the savages are led by one of the most brilliant strategists of the day. And the renegade is Druss the Legend.
My Comments
Well, well, have you noticed how, despite the fact that Gemmell's books aren't actually based on the Nadir, they still seem to revolve around them! Well, this one is definitely chocking up the Nadir support! This story shows another part of Druss's life, fitting in between The First Chronicles of Druss and Legend. It details the start of the life of the Uniter...the man who will unite all the Nadir tribes under one banner.
Gemmell plays everyone very nicely, starting his stories off with Legend, because at the end of this book, Druss is back at the same place he was in Legend (Don't worry I haven't spoilt anything! *g*)
Out of all the countries and people that Gemmell talks about the Nadir are the most fascinating, is that just me, or has Gemmell played his audience to a remarkable degree?! There is almost a need to know more!
Even though Druss is not one of my favourite characters, I adore this book. Sieben the poet makes another appearance, and check out Klay...does he remind you of anyone?....
It is very cleverly and beautifully written. You can taste the dust, feel the pain. My suggestion is as always, read it damn you!!!
