Book Cover info
As the Angostin battle hordes surge over the Southern Borders, the bandit Jarek Mace, and the magicker and bard Owen Odell find themselves in a country in deperate need of heroes, a country where evil sorcery abounds as a mad necromancer brings back to half-life the eons dead Vampyre Kings.Only Mace resists the invaders and is hailed by the people as a figure of myth, the legendary Morningstar come to save them once more. But Owen Odell knows the real Mace: the thief and philanderer who would cut a throat for the price of a meal.
As the final climatic battle approaches which of the two Maces will triumph: the self-serving thief or the saviour of his people, the Morningstar?
My Comments
This is meant to be a stand alone book, but I have my doubts, as there is mention of Ventria, one of the 'Drenai' Books' countries, maybe Gemmell just liked the name, but I doubt it somehow! He never does anything without reason I believe!
Anyway the book it self is a very bittersweet tale. It's a thinking book, makes you look at our own Legends and wonder who the people behind them really were, rather than what their images portrayed. It delves deeply into what makes a hero, and what a hero actually is, nice bit of philosophy!
The characters as usual are stunning, very real life and convincing. You feel Owen's fears, and you taste Jarek's anguish. I have to confess, I had my doubts when I first started reading it, but without realising I was quickly immersed into the story, and when I had finished it I had a real good think! Now that to me shows a wonderful storyteller.
I do as ever urge you to read it....
