The Full Moon Rituals of the Dhuna

The Dhuna Cast major magicks on the sixth day of the month in which the moon fall full that evening. Whoever is the head of that coven (male or female, maybe both), leads the group in casting the circle. Then the members are given leave to enter in the circle (Which requires a leader to specially open and close the circle behind the group).

Each full moon rite has general guidelines that are followed, but differ in who they address. The coven will get settled quickly within the circle (in the major covens this will be done with the rune circle as the boundaries). A couple of chosen will start off the rite.

May the Moon as she passes by,
Call upon the stars in her train,
To light our way in the dark of night
To love her as she guides our lives

We sing to her this night
As she stands full within her power
To let her know
We bask in the guiding light
Which is her love.

Now this will change sexual tense depend upon the moon we speak of and also the realm of the moon.

  • Ardan, the Purple moon of Love is female in every aspect
  • Drome, the Amber moon would be a virile young Zandir man
  • Jhang, the Crimson moon is a Kang warrior in full battle dress
  • Laeolis, the Blue moon is a saddened Zandir bride
  • Phandir, the Green moon is be a young Cymrillian male
  • Zar, the Black moon is a faceless cowled being
  • Talisandre, the Silver moon is a Sarista Women dancing through the fields
The head of the rite (witch or warlock) will lead the rest through the rite.

The Rite of Ardan

We pray that You, Lady Ardan
Watch over us upon this night
We pray to thee and offer of ourselves to You
We pay You homage on this night that is Yours

Wisdom, peace, happiness
That is what You bring
All that which is tied to Love
You are love and we Pray to You

Lead us down the paths
The ones which show the way
To love those about us
Those related to us
Those we have given our souls to

Love is Your Law and to it
We are bound
Keep us
We are the Symbols of Love
You are Love

On the nights that the full moon doesn't’ fall on the sixth of the month, this is the minor opening that is used. When the Full moon falls on the Night, the rite is longer, celebrating the might and full joyous power of that moon (for the moon only falls upon this day once a year). And for those petitioning to join the Ardan coven it is the most important night of their lives.

For each new Applicants joining the coven, an Initiate steps forward to sponsor them into the Rune Circle The ceremonies each have different aspects and rituals depending on which moon. But all are asked questions;

Have you come of your own free will? What do you seek? Have you completed all the tasks set before you as an Applicant? And things known only to those of the coven and its adepts.

Coven Initiation

Witch: Let those that come seeking the knowledge, that which the Moon can give Feel peace with the circle.
Witch2: The full moon is here to welcome all
Initiate: One has come from afar and wishes entrance, to enjoy our bounty with us
Initiate2: They await outside even now, to seek knowledge and friendship
Witch: Who will vouch for this person?
Initiate: I. For in showing her our ways. I have started to guide her down the path of Laeolis and she wishes to seek more.
Witch: Can they be brought to us?
Initiate: They await outside.

The two Initiates go to get the Applicant. Some may blindfold and bound their arms before entering in (as the release of the Applicants senses will signify her rebirth into the coven life). As the person (or in a big coven persons), are brought in the Initiates are challenged by the witch. Asking who comes and who they are. The Applicant gives name and asks entry be given.

Witch: (name)…Why do you seek us?
Applicant: To worship the Laeolis and know that which may be taught me.
Witch2: What do you bring with you?
Applicant: Just myself, naked and unadorned (if it would be custom for that moon to have a naked applicant then that would be appropriate).
Witch: Then I bid you to enter within.

The altar is set up in grand fashion. There are only certain items which are brought out this night for the Initiations and that aren’t seen for the whole year. At this point, while blindfolded the Applicant is questioned as to motives, what may have brought them to this coven. A lock of the person’s hair is cut and cast into the ritual fire at the altar, signifying her loss of her old life (or as I did use the other night, a gift given to me by my aunt who had been killed). The Initiates then take the Applicant to the four cardinal directions (ended with the direction of the moon) and announce her presence to the spirits which "control" that quarter.

Brought back to the altar and the blindfold is removed (of course meant to be a very moving experience). In the ceremony one of the Initiates introduces the Priest and Priestess of the coven as the physical manifestations of the male and female aspects of the moon on earth.

Applicant: I salute Lady Laeolis and that which she represents. I pledge to learn what she may offer in order to better the coven.

Here the Witch will ask if they know the Coven Rede. (the wiccan rede is : And it harm none, do what thou wilt). Make up whatever maybe be appropriate for the coven. The Witch will ask if they will abide by it and then the Initiates will be given leave to unbound the new Initiate.

Witch: May you start you new life in our coven with the blessings of Laeolis upon you. (here a craft name is given, if you wish one may be done for each coven that is separate from the adult name. The Witch will ask if the person has a name chosen already. They will say it if they do and then the witch pronounces that it will be the name that the coven will call them by.)

The Witch will then anoint the person in blessed oils, told that they will be known to other witches within their moon that they will be known only by their new name and after being retold of the coven rede, and the celebrations commence.

The Dhuna aren’t a true matriarchy or patriarchy, as both sexes have equal footing when it would come to the wisdom of leadership. Women are deferred to in matters of the heart and hearth. The calming feminine presence of the moons of Ardan, Laeolis and Talisandra.

Men are looked to in defense of the coven and in matter of keeping the sought after women safe as fear of slavers runs high. This is most evident in the protective aspects of Drome, Phandir and Jhang.

The moons only rise full on the sixth of the month once a year, thus making Initiation the most important thing to a Dhuna’s life. Those who try to bind to the stones for their marriage under the Ardan moon see this as the most important night of their lives. Those who wish to bind to Zar spend a year below the earth, to feel the black moon's presense most keenly in the utter dark.
