Summer Child

Summer Child

A woman with light brown hair
Saw you walking in the rain
And looked a little closer
As you neared, something changed

She saw you singing quietly
With hair matted from the weather
She almost stopped to talk to you
But figured silence better

Drenched from summers pouring fleet
Of surprising cold
She looked back to her son
And to the young one told:

"You see the man that just walked by?
He's a summer child
With long dark hair and wild eyes
And a half frowning smile

He never minds what's put behind
And he never sees the past
Where can you go if you don't know
From what place you came

So always watch, always, behind you
Because streets all look the same
It's too easy to lose the way
And there's no one else to tell you
Where you are or whence you came."

The rain seemed to hush the noise
From the young one's ears
And the rain drops seemed to hide
The mothers flowing tears

She saw you walking
And it made her think
Of times which seem so far
away
She picked her son up gently
And gazed up wishing there were stars

With one son grown and far away
And another on that same road
She cried because it seemed she knew
Where the world would leave her

Cast into a shadow with nothing left
Save all she'd put behind her
And memories are only good
If it's worth it to remember

So she held the tiny child
Wanting him to last
But knowing everymoment
That time passes much too fast
