Saint Elmo was a being of great age and power being a deity of some sort. He showed up for the special issue of Alpha Flight chronicaling Jamse Hudson's proto Alpha Flight known as First Flight. The big fella apparently had the power of turning matter into light or as Smart Alec put it, transillumination. The guy was very cocky and took delight in annoying mere mortals with his powers but in the end made the ultimate sacrifice saving New York City.
