Sean Benard had been a member of the Vancouver Police department for six years before he took it upon himself to report a few of his fellow officers to Internal Affairs. As those same fellow officers went to attack Detective Benard in an alleyway and remove the only witness to their misdeeds the lucky detective was saved by a recruiting Wolverine still in the employ of the Canadian government.
Being brought in to the team that would one day become Alpha Flight it was Sean Benard that first wore James MacDonald Hudson's battle suit with the electromagnetic powers. Benard trained with this early incarnation of the team and went on a mission with them against Egghead and a few of his fellow villains. After witnessing St. Elmo sacrifice himself Benard quit the team though later in life he came to realise its importance in the world.
