Shiro views himself as the protector of Japan. The former X-Man came to Department H on the advice of his friend Wolverine to get help in controlling his powers. The experts at the Department came to the conclusion that his powers were killing him through radiation poisoning. He has decided, at least for the moment to stay with the Department in the hope of finding a cure.
Shiro did not stay long with Alpha Flight but returned back to his native Japan frustrated with the policies of Department H and the department doctors.
