EARTHQUAKE
Everyone is working on ops when a loud alarm goes off and everyone stops working and Captain Sisko comes out of his office and asks, "What going on here?"
Lt. Dax looks up from her station and says, "It's Bajor Benjamin, the southern continent is having a earthquake. It's a big one, at least 9 on the Richter scale."
"Luckily not too many people have chosen to live there." Major Kira says as she looks up at Sisko.
Sisko walks down and over to Dax's station and asks, "Just how many is a few?" He looks at Kira who has left her station and has walk up to the other side of Dax's station.
"About five thousand, the cardassians stripe mined that hole continent pretty bad." Kira answers as she looks down at Dax's station.
"That a lot of people if you asks me." Chief O'Brien says from his station on the other side of ops.
"For the side of the continent that is not too many." Kira answers as she over at O'Brien.
"Benjamin, this signal toke two hours to get here! "If we were still orbiting Bajor we would have gotten it a little bit quicker." Dax says as she turns and looks up at Sisko.
"Captain we are message coming from Bajor, it's Minister Dorovl." O'Brien says as his eyes get a little bigger.
"Put it on the main viewer, Chief." Sisko says as he walks to the middle of Ops and looks up at the main viewer.
On the viewer a man a Bajoran man is sitting behind a desk with his hand on the table with a worried look on his face, as he says, "Captain we need your help, our southern continent has had a major earthquake, it was felt all over Bajor. The first report we got from the southern continent was that their only hospital was flatten, killing all but one of their doctors!"
"Will get a team ready be there in about three hours." Sisko answers as he looks at Dax and says, "Get all runabouts ready for launch in fifteen minutes!"
Minister Dorovl gives them a little smile as he says, "We are getting some very large after shocks, so be careful." The room he is in starts to shake and all at once all they see is stars again.
Dr. Bashir is sitting in Quark's bar when he hears Sisko, "Dr, the southern continent of Bajor has had a major earthquake and they need our help!"
Quark who had been standing close to Bashir, watches as Bashir walks out of his bar in a hurry, reaches up and rubs his hand over his ear as he says to himself, "They are going to need a lot of things, I smell a profit."
Bashir is busy watching as medical supplies are being stacks in the runabout as Dax and Kira enter the runabout and head towards the cockpit. Bashir follows them and asks, "Just where do you think you are going?"
Kira sits down and turns and looks at him as she answers him, "In case you have not notice I'm a Bajoran and they need help!"
"I'm going to see what I can do learn more about earthquake, by monitoring the after shocks." Dax says as she smiles and sits down and starts to run her hands over the control panel.
Bashir looks at Kira and then at Dax and says, "I hope your equipment does not take up to much room, the Bajor down there are going to need everything this runabout can carry!"
"I have only two small boxes Doctor and Quark is bring them!" Dax answers him without looking at him.
"QUARK, what is he doing going there?" Bashir shouts at her as he puts his hands on his hips.
"I think he thinks this is a good business deal." Dax answers as she turns and gives him a little smile.
Bashir just shake his head no as he walks back to check on the loading, Kira turns and looks at Dax and asks, "Have you ever been in a earthquake before?"
Dax answers her, "No, how about you?"
"No." Kira answer her with a little worried look on her face. "This is the first earthquake to hit Bajor in one hundred years."
Just then Bashir walks back to the cockpit and says, "We are all loaded and ready to leave."
"Kira to Ops, we are ready to leave." Kira says as she gives both Dax and Bashir a quick glance.
"Good luck, your are clear to launch." They hear Sisko answers her.
Two hours later the runabout is in orbit of Bajor, Bashir is getting ready to beam down to Bajor. He is setting boxes on the transporter padd as he says, "This is what I want beam down first."
Dax and Kira walk out of the cockpit and say, "They just had a after shock that read 6 on the Richter scale."
"How many after shock will there be?" Bashir asks with a worried look on his face
"I do not know, some earthquake get them for years after the earthquake." Dax answers him as she moves on the transporter padd.
Bashir looks at her and says, "Lt. let me take my supplies down first, you can follow with the next batch."
"We'll be right behind you." Dax answers as she walks over to the control panel and says, "See you on Bajor." She then nods at Kira and then both moves onto the transporter padd and the next thing they are standing on Bajor.
The first thing they see is a small group of Bajoran standing around Bashir with sticks in their hands. They both pull out their phaser as Kira shouts, "Move back, NOW!" The men slowly move back as she asks, "What do you think you are doing, his here to help you!"
One of the men gives her a mean look and answers her, "We do not like outsider, coming here!"
Kira looks around at the buildings that have fallen down and are burning and says, "It looks like you are going to need a hole lot help!"
Bashir takes a few steps closer to them and says, "I'm a doctor, I heard that your doctors were killed in the earthquake."
Just then the ground starts to shake and everyone falls to the ground, when it stops moving, Dax gets up slowly and says, "That had to be at least a five!"
One of the men gets up and looks at Bashir and says, "You can follow me, I will take you too were we are setting up a hospital."
Bashir starts to follow the man as he says, "I have brought some supplies that we may need!"
The men move towards the medical supplies as a woman with blood on her clothes moves out from behind one of the down building and see says, "Jolene well be glad you are here, she has her hand full!"
As Bashir follows her he sees rows of bodies cover by sheets laying on the ground, everyone once in away there is someone crying over a body. After he has followed the woman he sees an area where some table have been setup. At one of the table he sees a woman standing with her back to him working on someone on a table. As he gets closer to her he sees that she is covered with blood. All at one he stops in his tracks when he sees that she is a Cardassian!
She turns as he walks up to her and she says, "If you're a doctor? Get busy, they are bring in more injured people every minute!"
"I have brought you supplies that I think we are going to need!" Bashir answers her as he walks up to one of the tables and see a little girl with an injured arm and starts to work on her. He turns and looks over his shoulder and says, "The name is Julian Bashir, what's yours?"
Without turns around she answers him, "Jolene and if you what to know why I'm here? I'm married to a Bajoran farmer."
Kira is standing next to Dax as she watches other Bajoran are trying to put out some of the fires as she shakes her head no, she looks at Dax and says, "I do not sees one building still standing."
Dax shakes her head as she says, "There is much that can withstand a earthquake as big as this one was."
Just then Quark beams down a little ways from them with some boxes, he looks at Dax and says, "Here is your stuff, now where can I setup shop?"
Kira walks up to him and she grabs him as she says, "Look around you, there is not place for you to setup a shop."
Dax walks up to him and says, "Listen Quark, why don't you just hand out your supplies and make everyone happy."
Quark puts his hand over his heart and takes a step back as he answers her, "Where would the profit be, if I just gave everything away?"
"Quark you can try and sell your supplies, but I would keep a very close eye on them." Kira says as she gives Quark a big grin.
Quark's mouth drops open as he looks around and then a little smile come over his face as he says, "Major you are not doing anything, how about I hire you to watches over my supplies?"
Kira reaches out and grabs Quark as she answers him, "As soon as Dax is setup, I'm going to help to get the injured to the hospital!"
The ground starts to shake again and they fall to the ground and Quark with wide eyes and look at Dax and ask, "Do you need any help getting setup?"
Once the ground has stops shaking Dax gets up slowly and brushes herself off and answers Quark, "If you real want to help someone, give the Bajoran your supplies and then leave!"
Quark looks around at the Bajoran who are starting to walk towards his supplies and then at Dax and Kira and then back at the Bajoran who are now taking his supplies as he says, "Their stealing my supplies!"
"Quark if I were you I would either go and take your supplies away from them, or leave and try to collect at a later dated!" Kira answers him as she too brushes herself off and heads towards the Bajorans who are carrying Quark's supplies away.
Quark watches her walk away and then looks at Dax who is starting to head towards her supplies, he shouts at her, "I'll be back to collect tomorrow, mark my word!"
Kira just shakes her head no as she follows Dax up to her supplies and picks up one of the boxes and asks, "Where do you want to setup?"
Dax's looks around and then points towards a small tree and says, "Over there will do I guess."
They both carry the supplies over to the little tree, where Dax sets her box down and opens it and takes out a console and sets it on top of the box. She says, "I hope with this will gives us some warning as too when the next after shock is going to come."
Kira gives her a little laugh as she says, "If it does I will buy you a drink at Quarks when we get back."
"I'll hold you too that." Dax answers her with a big smile.
Bashir slowly gets up from the ground once it has stop shaking and looks over at Jolene who is also getting up and says, "I think we should send the worst cases up to the station!"
She looks at him with a tried look and answers him, "You are right, it's not safe here and we need the room." She walks over to one table and rights it and then looks down at the injured woman and sadly says, "Here's one we will not have to move again."
Bashir walks over and looks down and then looks at Jolene and says, "There is more where she came from." They both bend down and pick her up and carry her over to where others that have died are laid out and they set her down as Jolene says, "You have gone to be with the Prophets."
Bashir looks at her with a puzzle look as he says, "I have never heard a Cardassian says anything like that before."
She gives just turns and walks back towards the table as she says, "I do not care what you think, we have more injured people to help!"
All at one a Bajoran man carrying a little boy walks up to one of the tables and turns towards Jolene and says, "I just found him Jolene."
Jolene covers her mouth with her hand as she screams "NOT Lorain!" She turns towards Bashir and says, "You have to save our son!?
Bashir moves quickly up to the table and looks down and sees a young boy about seven who looks Cardassian but with a Bajoran nose, he sees that the boy has a head injuring. He looks at Jolene and says, "I will do my very best!" Jolene does not say anything as she turns towards another table and starts to work on another injured person.
An hours later Bashir puts the last Bandage on Lorain and looks up and sees that the sun is starting to go down. He turns around and asks Jolene, "Is their any lights around here?" With a worried look on his face, he looks around at all the injured waiting for them to help them.
Jolene turns and looks at him and answers him, "NO, did you bring any with you?" Her eyes get big as she look around at all the injured Bajorans waiting to be help, she looks at him and says, "We need to get some lights here if we are going to save them!"
Bashir wipes his hands on a cloth and then says, "I'll go and have Major Kira find us some lights."
He quickly heads towards the last place he had seen Major Kira, he sees her carrying a box towards where she has been working and shouts, "Major we are going to need some lights!"
Kira stops and looks at him and then looks towards the setting sun and says, "I will put in a call to the station to have them send us some lights, but it will take time to get them here."
Bashir looks towards the setting sun with a sad look and says, "Time is something we do not have!"
Kira looks back towards the setting sun and answers him, "I will do what I can till."
She watches as Bashir hurries back to where he was working, she hurries back to where Dax is hard at work.
Dax looks up and tells her, "We are going to need some lights if we are going to keep working throw the night!"
"You are not the only one that needs some lighting, Bashir also needs lighting." Kira answers her as she sets down the box she had been carrying.
Dax looks up from her console and then back at her console and then answers her, "The doctor should get them first!"
Kira looks towards the sun and sees the last slice of sun light as she says, "It's going to be a long night."
Dax looks down at her console and then looks up at Kira and says, "Till the lights get here, we can starts some fires to give them light to work by." She turns her console off and gets up and heads towards where the doctor is working.
Kira catches up with her and asks, "Maybe I should call the Capitol and see if they can send some light, it would be faster?"
Without stopping Dax answers her, "Do it, anything that they can do will help us here."
Bashir makes his way back to the field hospital where he can by now just make out where he is walking. As he gets back to the field hospital he spots Jolene standing next to Lorain running her fingers throw his hair as a tear runs down her face.
"He will be alright given a little time and some loving care." Bashir tells her as he puts his hand on her shoulder.
"All he talks about is becoming a Star Fleet officer." Jolene tells him without turning and looking at him.
"If he is anything like his mother, he will make a good officer." Bashir says as he starts to move towards some of the other injured as he takes out his medical tricorder and runs it over a Bajoran male.
Jolene looks up at Bashir and says, "I would like him to follow in his father's steps and being a farmer.
Just then Dax 's walks up to them without looking at Jolene as she asks, "If I was to starts some fires would that help you?"
Bashir looks at her and answers her, "No that would not help too much, we need more light then a fire would gives us."
Dax turns and looks at Jolene and her mouth drops open when she sees that she is a Cardassian. Just then Kira comes walking up to them and when she sees Jolene she pulls out her phaser as she says, "Don't move you're under arrest!"
Bashir move quickly in front of Jolene and says, "What do you think you are doing Major!"
"I've seen what she has done to those who were in her care. Some cannot walks, other wish they were died!" Kira answers with fire in her eyes as she moves a little closer to them.
Bashir turns and gives Jolene and sees her looking down at the floor, he looks at Kira and says, "I do not care she may have done in the past, but right now we need her!"
"That is way we never turn her over to the government for trial!" A Bajoran says behind Kira as he is helping a female injured Bajoran over to one of the tables.
Kira looks over her shoulder without lowering her phase and see the man and says, "After what she did too your father, you can says you want her here?"
The man stands up straight and answers her, "Yes I can, she is married to my oldest boy and she has given me a grandson."
"Multz we need lights here fast, or we will start to loss some of my patients!" Jolene says as she takes a step towards him.
Multz looks at Kira and says, "You can be more helpful, by giving us a hand looking for some lights MAJOR!"
Kira lowers her Phaser and looks back at Jolene and says, "Once other know you are here, other will come for her." As she walks right by Multz without saying a word.
Quark walks into Sisko office and hands him a data padd as he smile at Sisko who just looks at the padd and whistle as he asks, "What do you what me to do with this?"
"I'm here to collect what is do me." Quark answers as he puts his hands behind his back.
"You have come to the wrong person to collect from, you need to collect from the Bajorans, not me." Sisko answers as he hands the data padd back to Quark.
"But Captain the Bajorans just toke my supplies without paying for them and with the way things are down there it will be next to impossible to collect from them!" Quark states as he takes the data padd back.
"You should have thought about that before you ran off to try and make a profit." Sisko answers him as he leans back in his chair with a little smile.
"Lt. Commander Dax owes my for delivering her equipment for her." Quark says with a big smile on his face.
"You had better take that up with her when she gets back here." Sisko answers him as he stands up and says, "I would not over charge her, if you know what is good for you!"
Once the sun is down Bashir grabs some blankets and starts to cover some of the injured patients as he sees Jolene standing next to her son. He slowly walks over to her as he checks on some of the patients that he walks by on his way to her. When he gets next to her he sees that she is holding his hand and he says, "I would like to send him back on the next runabout, so he can get better care then we can give him here."
"He knows nothing about my past life and I do not want him to find out if I can help it." Jolene says as she looks at him with as a tear rolls down her chin. She turns and walks over to another patient and checks on him out as she says, "I came her to die, I could not live with myself after what I did during the occupancy. But they needed a doctor here and they said if I work for them I could live here and work at saving life's."
"If you want I will tell the Major just what you have told me, I think she will understand." Bashir says as he goes to check on some other patients, he can hardly make out who it is as it is starting to get real dark. The only light that he can see is coming from some fires that are still burning.
He hears someone coming and he moves towards there where he meets Kira who is stubbing towards him. She looks up at him and says, "Don't stay a word doctor!? She stands up and brushes herself off and then says, "We could not find any working lights, the station is sending some lights but they will not get here for about two hours."
"Did you try the capital? It is a lot closer." Bashir asks as he looks around at the injured Bajoran he can just make out.
"At first light is as soon as they can get supply's here, they are have some of the same problems we are have with lights and power." She answers as she moves closer to the Bajoran laying on a table, in pain and looks back at Bashir with a tear in her eye.
Three hours later Kira is watching as Bashir and Jolene move from table to table working with some Star Fleet nurse who came from the station on as many Bajorans as fast as they can. She is manly keeping her eyes lock on Jolene with a look of hate in her eyes.
Off to one side O'Brien who has been busy setting up more lights stops working and walks over to her and says, "Major I just heard that Shakaar shuttle is going to be landing in about two minutes." He looks towards where Kira is looking and says, "She knows her stuff."
Kira does not answers him as she just watches Jolene and then looks at O'Brien and finely says, "Yes she now her stuff, but its her past that troubles me."
O'Brien nods his head yes as he answers her, "I think she is trying to make up for her past by working here."
They both here some shuttles approaching and turns and sees five shuttles starting to land in a open field near them. They both head towards the shuttles and watches as Shakaar exit one of the shuttles. With a smile Kira walks up to him and says, "It's good to see you again." She turns and looks towards the field hospital and says, "I have found Jolene!"
Shakaar just looks towards the field hospital and says, "We have know for a long time that she was here. We decide it was better to leave here then to have a trial. They needed another doctor here, now they really need her!"
Kira watches as Shakaar walks into the field hospital and start to talk to some of the patient as he walks throw it, he walks up to Jolene and puts his hand on her shoulder and says something to her and then they both look towards her. She takes a deep breath and heads towards them. When she gets next to Shakaar she looks at Jolene and asks, "How are your patient doing?"
Jolene smiles at her and answers, "I think we are not going to loss too many more of them, now that we have lights."
Kira gives her a little smile and says, "That is good to hear, Star Fleet will have four more doctors here tomorrow."
Shakaar looks around with a sad look on his face and says, "It's going to take a lot of work to bring this place back to what it was."
Jolene looks around and says, "It can never go back to what it was, we have all lost too much!" She looks at one of her patient and says, "We are all going to have to learn to live a little different now."
Shakaar reaches into one of his pockets and pulls out a data padd and says, "I understand a mister Quark supplies were stolen here and he is own some money?" He looks at Kira and asks, "As the highest raking officer here, why did you not stop them from stealing his supplies?"
Kira just looks up at Shakaar and answers him, "What was I suppose to do, shot them? They need those supplies and he know it!" She look around her and says, "As far as what he is asking, it way to much!"
"Tell him we will pay for his supplies but it's going to take a little time." Jolene says as she turns and walks over to another patient, with a sad look on her face.
Bashir walks up to them and says, "I just heard her son is going to be a right." He smiles and then walks up to Jolene and tells her the same thing and she gives him a big hug.
Kira and Shakaar turn and slowly walk away from the field hospital and Kira asks, "Why was I never told she was here?"
Shakaar puts his hands behind his back and he answers her, "There are still those that would try to kill her." He looks around and says, "When I heard she was living here, I was mad too, but then I meet her and sew what she was doing here. She works night and day to help this people, when we could not get anyone else to come here."
"She has not slept sense we got here yesterday!" Kira says as she looks down and says, "You were right not to tell me she was here, I would have try to arrest her or worse."
Just then Dax comes walking up to them with a little smile and says, "From what I'm getting on my instruments the worst of the after shock are over."
"That is good to hear, having the ground shake every little while is not fun." Kira answers with a little laugh as her and Shakaar walks toward his shuttle together.
She takes his arm and asks, "Are their any other Cardassians who stayed?"
Shakaar turns around and looks back towards the field hospital and then answers her, "Yes, there are a few who decide to stay and help us to rebuild Bajor."
Kira looks back too and says, "She is some woman, Bajor could use a few more like her."
Shakaar puts his hand on her shoulder and says, "All you have to do is look in the mirror, Nerys."
Kira watches as Shakaar enter his shuttle and then watches as it takes off and slowly walks back to the field hospital. She stops and smiles as she says to herself, "I think today is going to be a nice day." She looks over to the side of the field hospital and sees that they are already starting to work on a new hospital. She takes a deep breath and walks over to Dax and says, "Tell Captain Sisko, that I'm going to stay here for a few more days and see what I can do to help rebuild their hospital." She looks down at the ground and says, "I also own Jolene an apology for the way I acted when I got here."
Dax smiles and says, "I'll tell him, he will understand."
Kira turns and heads towards the field hospital, as she watches the Bajor working on the new hospital. She sees Jolene leaning up against a light poll watching them too. She walks up to her and says, "I would like to apology for my action yesterday."
Jolene just watches them working and then says, "I understand your feeling towards me. At night sometime I cannot sleep because of what I did." She looks at Kira and says, "But all I have to do is look at my husband or my son and I can sleep sometimes."
"I too sometime have sleeping." Kira says as she turns and heads towards the new hospital. She stops and turns around and says, "Walk with the Prophets."
Jolene gives her a little smile and says, "You too Major."
