WILDERNESS
This story takes place during the second season of Deep Space nine. Commander Sisko is standing in front of an airlock door with his hands behind his back as Major Kira, Dr. Bashir and Chief Miles O'Brien are walking up to the airlock. Kira stops with a pack handing over her shoulder and says, "Are you here to sees us off Commander?"
Sisko slowly looks them over and answers, "I just came to make sure you are dress for where you are going and I see you are not!"
O'Brien gives him a little laugh and answers; "I loaded everything we will need last night."
Sisko show them a big smile as he says, "Have a safe trip then." He steps off to the side and lets them enter the airlock.
Kira moves right up to the cockpit of the runabout and sits down as she says; "Kira to Ops Yangtzee Kiang is ready to lift off."
O'Brien is sitting down as they hear Dax reply, "You are clear, have a safe trip and stay warm."
Bashir moves up behind Kira and asks, "Why is everyone worry about us staying warm?"
O'Brien gives him a little laugh as he answers; "We are heading Bajor's North Pole, it's very cold there."
"But it's the middle of the summer there!" Bashir answers with a look of shock on his face.
Kira turns and looks at him with big eyes and says, "Doctor their summer are almost as bad as their winter."
"Just remember to keep your hood up on top of your head." O'Brien says as he gives Kira a big smile.
"Why would anyone want to live in should a cold place?" Bashir asks as he sits down behind Kira.
"The Cardassians keep asking the same question and they could never get them to move off the pole." Kira answers, as she shakes her head no.
"Home is where the heart is." O'Brien says as he turns and looks at Kira and Bashir.
Two hours later Kira turns around and looks at O'Brien and Bashir who are busy putting on heavy coats and says, "Its time to head into the wilderness gentlemen." She stands up and puts on a heavy coat too and pulls the hood over her head as she moves next too them. She hands them some glass as she says, "Keep these on too, or you man get snow blind."
O'Brien and Bashir put the glass on as Bashir says, "I wish I had token winter survival at the Academy now."
There are boxes also all around them, Kira looks at them as they nod their heads at her and she says, "Energize."
The first thing they see white in front of their eyes and the biter cold as the snow is blowing around they. Bashir hold his hand out in front of himself, but can hardly see it. He turns to where Kira should be and says, "What are their winter like?"
From out in front of them they hear a male voice; "We do not go out in the winter."
"Your message said that you need medical supplies and a doctor." Kira shout over the wind as she grabs Bashir's arm.
"Yes, we sent a message over a month ago. What has keep you?" The voice answers as it draws closer.
"The Bajoran government just got your message two days ago!" Kira answers as she tries to see the man throw the snow.
All at once they can see the out line of a group of men as the man answers, "We have to hurry our doctor die three months ago!"
Bashir shouts over the wind, "I have some medical supplies here too."
The man says, "We will mark the spot so we can find them again."
"I also brought a new sub space radio for you." O'Brien says as he reaches down and picks up one of the crates.
The man almost in front of them says, "We'll put a rope around you so we do not loss you."
They all feels a rope being put around them and then they feel something pulling them and Bashir says to himself, "What have I gotten myself into this time?"
After they have been walking for about five minutes they hear a loud female scream coming from somewhere up ahead of them.
Kira stops and answers, "Who is that?"
She feels someone grab her arm as he says, "That is my wife and she needs your doctor, so keep moving!"
They hear another louder scream as they come to a snow hill and Kira sees a side of the hill slowly open to show a bright light coming from inside of the hill. She enters the hill and sees that it is home and laying off to the side on some furs is a very pregnant female Cardassian.
Kira stops in her track and just stares at he female, till someone behind her pushes her rest of the way in. Behind her O'Brien and Bashir come almost falling into the building, they both stop when they sees the woman laying on the furs. Bashir's mouth drops open as he says, "My god!"
A man wearing a very heavy fur coat follows them in and says, "Doctor you have too help my wife." He pulls off his hood and they see that he is a Bajoran male.
"It's coming!" The woman shouts as she puts her hands on her stomach and throws her head back.
Bashir quickly takes off his coat and carries his med. Kit over to the woman and opens it and runs a scanner over her stomach, he looks at her and says, "I have never deliver a Cardassian baby before!"
Kira who is taking off her coat looks at Bashir and says, "I did once." She looks around the room and sees that a small group of men and one woman have followed them into the building. Chief take these people out of here and setup your sub space radio somewhere."
O'Brien looks at Kira and then at Bashir and then at the men behind him and says, "Where do you want me to set it up?"
"Follow we." One of the men says as he turns and heads back into the blowing snow and O'Brien pulls his hood back on and follows him out.
O'Brien feeling glad that he has a rope around him or he would get loss out here. When he comes to another hill and the man opens this hill up and they go inside where he sees that it's is made out of steel. He looks around some more and sees that its is a old Cardassian ship. He turns to the man he had been following and asks, "Did you shot it down?"
The man is taking off his furs and he looks at him and answers, "No this is where Guise crashed it."
O'Brien takes off his coat and then opens the boxes he was carry and sits the sub space radio on a table as he asks, "Who is Guise."
"Corona mate, the Cardassian woman back there." He answers as he points with his head. He walks over and looks at the radio and says, "You may not believe me when I says that we just found out about the war is over."
O'Brien looks up at the man with a smile and says, "Yes for closes to two years now. I suppose you will be heading south now?"
The man looks at the other men in the ship and answers, "I do not know, I for one like it here."
"You LIKE it here!" O'Brien asks as his eyes get a little bigger and he shakes his head no.
Some of the men laugh and then one say, "At least we never get sun burn and the hunting is good too." He points to all the furs that are lying around the room.
Kira is busy watching Bashir as he is running his scaner over the woman and asks, "Just how many babies have you deliver doctor?"
Without taking his eyes off the scaner he answers, "Three, why do you asks?"
"Just wonder, is all." Kira answers as she looks at the man who is sitting down next to the female Cardassian and taking her hand and giving it a little kiss.
"It's going to be all right my love." The man says as he turns and looks at Bashir and then Kira.
"If I had know I was going to be deliver a baby I would have brought more equipment." Bashir says as he puts the scaner down and asks, "This is your first child?"
"The woman screams in pain and then answers him, "NO."
Bashir looks down at the woman and then at the man and asks, "What are your names?"
The man looks down at the woman and says, "This is Guise and my name is Corona." He picks up Guise's hand and gives it a kiss. He turns back to Bashir and says, "She lost her first one, two years ago, he only live for three hours."
Bashir looks over at Kira how is just staring down at the woman and asks, "Do you now anything about delivery Cardassian babies?"
Kira looks down at Guise and answers, "Once when I was about ten I help to delivery a Cardassian baby for the Cardassian woman I was cleaning house for." She takes off her shirt and looks at Corona and says, "I will need some blankets and hot water now!"
Corona looks up at Kira and then at Guise and says, "I'm not leaving her!" He gives her hand a little squeeze as a tear rolls down his chin.
Kira just stares at him and answers in a very mean voice, "I need those things if you want my help!"
Guise looks up at Corona and says; "Do what she asks my love."
Corona grabs his heavy coat and heads towards the door as he says, "I will be right back my love."
Bashir looks at Kira and asks, "Why did you do that?" With a puzzle look on his face as he looks down at Guise.
"We need some warm blankets and the hot water is to wash the baby with!" Kira answers as she bends down next to Guise and asks, "How close are the pains?"
"His coming!" Guise shouts as she grabs her stomach and screams out in pain.
Corona enters the building were O'Brien is busy sitting up the sub space radio, O'Brien turns towards him and says, "How is it going?"
Corona, who is busy opening some box answers, "I'm not sure, they sent me for more blankets and something to hold hot water in!"
O'Brien shows him a little smile as he says, "Guise is in good hands." He turns back to the radio as he says to himself, "I sure hope I right!"
One of the other men gets up and says, "Corona we have been talking and we thinks it about time we head back down to where its warm all year round."
Corona holding some blankets looks at him and nobs his head yes as he looks over at O'Brien and asks, "Could your people help us to move?"
"O'Brien turns back around with a smile on his face as he answers him, "It may take a few trips but I do not see why not."
With a big smile turns and heads back outside into the blowing snow, O'Brien looks at the other men and says, "You had better go tell your family's to get ready to move."
Just as Corona walks in he hears a baby crying and Bashir saying, "It's a boy!"
Kira hears him entering and she looks at him and says, "I need one of those blankets NOW!"
Corona hurrys over nexts to Bashir as he hands a blanket to Kira who is holding a baby in her hands, he hands the blanket to Kira as he looks down at Guise who is looks real tired as he grabs her hand and says, "I'm here, my love."
Bashir moves nexts to Kira and runs his scaner on the baby as Kira shouts, "Where is that water I asks for?"
Bashir turns towards Corona and Guise and says, "I need to get your son back to the station for more tests." He looks down at his scaner with a frown on his face.
Corona looks up at Bashir with a scared look on his face as he asks, "Is something wrong with him?"
"I'm not sure, but I think there may be a hole in his heart." Bashir answers as he looks at Kira who is busy cleaning the baby, she stops and looks down at the baby in her hands with bigs sared look in eyes.
Two hours later Kira and Bashir step off a turbolift followed by Corona and Guise who is carrying her baby in her arms. From his shop Garak sees them and stops and walks towards his shops enters as his mouth falls open and he says, "Guise, it cannot be!" He takes a step outside of his shop and he shouts, "Guise!"
Guise stops in her tracks and turns and looks towards Garak and without saying anything she turns her back to him and looks at Bashir and says, "Where is your infirmary?"
Kira and Bashir both look at Garak and then at Guise and Bashir answer her, "This way." He takes off leading her towards his infirmary.
But Kira just stand there and then turns and walks slowly over to Garak and asks him, "Do you know Guise?"
Garak watches Guise walking away answers, "Yes, she is my daughter, I thought she was dead!"
Kira looks over her shoulder and says, "She is very much alive and has just given birth to a baby."
Garak's mouth drops open as he asks, "By that Bajoran she was with?"
Kira still looking over her shoulder answers, "Yes and his name is Corona, he is the leader of his people."
Garak takes another step out of his shop as he says, "Where has she been living? When she was reported missing I though she was killed!"
"She has been living on the North Pole." Kira answers as she turns and heads back the way she had come with a puzzled look on her face now.
Garak looks down at his hands and turns around and walks back into his shop as he says, "She alive and I'm a grandfather!" He shakes his head no as he starts to pickup some clothe as he looks back outside of his shop.
The next day Bashir is smile as he runs his medical scaner over the baby as he says, "He is much better now." He looks up at Guise who is just staring down at her baby with a worried look on her face.
"I was so worried I was going to lose this one too." Gusie answers as she reaches down and toaches the baby little hand.
"You can take him to your new home tomorrow if you like." Bashir answers as he puts his scaner down and reaches down and toaches the baby other hand.
All at once Garak walks into the infirmary carrying some clothes in his hand; he stops and looks at Guise as he says, "I brought the baby some clothes."
Guise turns and looks at him with a very mean look in her eyes as she shouts, "Get out of here."
Garak looks down at the clothes in his arms as he says, "You can hate me all you want, just take these as a token of my love for you." He sets the clothes down on a table and turns and walks out of the infirmary.
Bashir smiles at Guise and says; "I will never understand that man." He looks back down at the baby and says, "He never says much about himself."
"A man like him cannot I guess and they make worse fathers!" Guise answers as she wipes a tear off her face.
Bashir looks over at the clothes sitting on the table and says, "He is a very good tailor."
"You mean for a spy, his is a good tailor?" Gusie answers with a little smile on her face.
The next day Gusie and Corona who is holding the baby in his arms are standing at an airlock with Kira and Sisko. "You will have to let me come and see you once you get settle in your new home." Kira says with a little smile as she looks at the baby.
"You can come as often as you like. I'm sure we will not have many friends at first." Corona says as he looks down at his son who is sleeping in Gusie hands.
"We have gotten all of your people off the pole who wanted to leave and they are waiting for you on Bajor." Sisko says as he too looks down at the baby.
Kira looks towards Garak's shop and sees that it is closed and says, "We will be keeping a very close eye on your father. Do you wanted to know if he is coming to see you?"
"I have nothing to says to him, he can go to hell for all I care!" She looks at Corona and says, "Lets go to out new home my love."
Corona smiles at Gusie and says, "Maybe in a few years he can come and see his grandson! If he can stay out of trouble."
Guise gives him a little laugh as she says, "He could never stay out of trouble, he loves trouble and everything that goes with it."
Kira and Sisko both give little laugh too as Sisko says, "He could change, it has been know to happen."
"My father will never change, I know that for a fact!" Guise answers as she turns and enters the airlock, followed by Corona.
After the door has closed Kira turns and looks at Sisko as she says, "I wish them all the luck there is, they are going to need it."
Sisko nobs his head yes as he answers here, "Something tell me they will make it."
Kira turns and looks towards Garak's shops and says, "I would love to know more about Garak?"
"Give us time and I think we will find out everything about him, but it will take time." Sisko answers as he heads toward a turbolift and ops.
From his shop Garak peeps a look outside as he says, "Go in peace my daughter."
