Martial arts as used here is an advanced skill(like Droid Engineering or medicine) and requires the prerequesite skill level(brawling in this case) to use.
Martial arts give a bonus to its user when used against opponents without martial arts. Bonuses do not apply against someone with ANY form of martial arts.
Martial arts is also its own defensive skill. It may be used to dodge, parry, or block close combat attacks such as brawling or melee attacks, as well as to attack.
Here is a listing of styles. Noghri Martial arts is given in the Thrawn trilogy Sourcebook, the others are from a variety of sources, including my own thoughts, books, and even a video game.
Noghri Martial Arts: +2d to hit/defend +1d+2 to damage
A style developed by the Noghri. It involves striking with the hands and may involve the use of claws.
Alderaanian Self Defense: + 1d+2 to hit +2d defend and +1d+1 to damage
A style developed by the Alderaanians to defend themselves from opponents when the user is unarmed. This style involves defensive stances and counterstrikes mostly.
Coynite Martial Arts: + 1d to hit/defend and +2d+2 to damage
A style developed by the Coyns to accentuate the use of their weapons as well as unarmed combat. Note: This style may apply its bonuses to the use of a melee weapon as well as open hand strikes and kicks.
Teras Kasi: + 1d+2 to hit/defend and +2d to damage
A legendary style known only to a select few around the Galaxy. This style is also a different way of using the force. It is usually uses force pike strikes, and flipping dodges. Note: When a Force point is used with this style it gives an additional +3 bonus after the doubling for the force point.
Lightsabre: +sense to hit/defend and +control to damage
This is the ancient Jedi art of the lightsabre. This is generally only taught to Jedi, although there are exceptions and anyone can learn to use it. Note: This style waives the brawling requirement. Also, parrying blaster bolt also requires the lightsabre combat force power.
Bounty Hunter Martial Arts: + 1d+2 to hit/defend and +1d+2 to damage (+2d +2 if attempting to stun an opponent)
This is a form of martial arts developed by Bounty Hunters to restrain a bounty. This style uses punches, kicks, and holds to incapacitate or restrain an opponent.
