The colossal gargoyle is a huge towering menace of teeth, claws and wings. Despite their low intelligence, they are capable fighters. Colossal gargoyle males are typically 24' tall and weighs 11,500 pounds while females are one or two feet shorter and are 1000 to 2000 pounds lighter. Colossal gargoyles have grey or green skin, with black or red hair. Their eyes are a dull yellow found in predatory birds. They can live to be 400 years old. Colossal gargoyles have a natural armor class of 3 and a strength of 23. They tend shun the wearing of armour as it impedes flying.
Colossal gargoyles cary their belongings in huge sacks. A typical colossal gargoyle's sack contains 2-5 throwing rocks, the giant gargoyles wealth, and 3-12 (3d4) mundane items. Every thing inside is old, worn, dirty and smelly making the identification of any valuable items difficult.

Combat: Colossal gargoyles generally hunt in groups of two to three males. They prefer to ambush their opponents either attacking from cover, or swooping down on their enemies. When swooping down on their enemies colossal gargoyles can snatch up things of size M or smaller. If attacking from cover they will first fire boulders at their enemies. Adult Colossal gargoyles can hurl rocks 3-240 yards, inflicting 2-20 points of damage to anyone struck. In melee combat colossal gargoyles can attack with their claws (1d6), their tail (1d12), or their wings (1d6 and make a dexterity check or be knocked prone).

Habitat/Society: Colossal gargoyles prefer to dwell in deep caves high in the mountains. They normally live in compamy with their relatives, and a typical lair will include 9-16 (1d8+8) members. If six or more giants are encountered in a lair, half of them will be male, one quarter of them female, and the remainder will be immature gargoyles. To determine a colossal gargoyle's maturity roll 1d4. A roll of 4 indicates an infant with no combat ablility and the hit points of an ogre. Rolls of 1-3 indicate older progeny with hit dice, and "to hit" rolls equal to that of a fire giant. Damage caused is -1 to each damage roll. Occasionally a colossal gargoyle of average intelligence can be found. This gargoyle is able to rally bands of his peers so 2, 3, or 4 times the number gargoyles usually appearing are encountered. There is a 50% chance a band of colossal gargoyles will have gaurds in their lairs, and the gaurding creatures will be (2-8) regular gargoyles (50%), (1-3) stone giants (30%), or 1d12 ogres(20%).

Colossal gargoyles hate mages and will ceremoniously kill them in elaborate (and painful) sacrificial rites.

Ecology: Colossal gargoyles were created when the mages of Maebus were experimenting with creatures to defend their city. Since these creatures were so large, the mages lost control of them, and after a causing incredible damage on a rampage were killed or forced from the city. Food that can be found close by the mountains is gathered by the females or by the guardian monsters. Other foods such as horsemeat, beef or venison, is gathered by males hunting in the valleys below.
