Time: Sometime after the mission briefing

Zack stepped off the lift into Ops. There was the usual bustle of
activity as personnel moved about to and from their duty stations. The
only difference this morning was that the entire senior staff was present.

Approaching Zack, Ruane asked, "Have you made the necessary preparations
for the drill?"

"Aye, sir. The drill will really only affect station personnel.
Civilians wouldn't even know we are having one unless I hadn't placed
notices on the the Pubcom system. The only thing the civilians will see
is personnel running to their duty stations at most."

"Very good Mister Hogan. Proceed when ready."

Zack moved to take his place behind tactical. Raising his voice and
permitting ample time for the chatter in the room to die down, he began
outlining the scenario.

"The treaty with the Dergrad and Vurtedions has been broken. The Dergrad
have sided with the Dominion and attacked the Vurtedion homeworld. The
BANGALORE is away from station performing convoy duty for the evacuation
of the Vurtedions that commenced before the destruction of their
homeworld. As of 0800 this morning our long range sensor platforms have
detected an armada of ten Dominion and Dergrad warships headed our way.
Our job is to hold that armada here until our own reinforcements can
arrive. Now you know everything I know. What happens from here is up to
our responses and those of the computer simulation."

Selak began his report.

"As far as Navigation is concerned, there is nothing to report.
As far as the status of the stations shuttles that is a different
matter.
I have just come from shuttle bay 1, where Chief Smallwood has
given me the latest update. All shuttles except for 2 of the 3 large
personal shuttles are flight ready. One of them can be made ready
if he is given 1 hours notice. The other will be out of commission for
at least two days, pending the arrival of a new warp nacelle."

"Can't he replicate the parts he needs to repair it?" Asked Ruane.

"No, the Warp field coils have been to badly damaged by an
explosion caused by one of his junior staff and he thinks the earlier
engine imbalance that it was suffering from was caused by a faulty
Plasma injector. So the best option is to replace the whole nacelle."

"What is the problem with the other shuttle?" Ruane asked.

"He is using it to test the other components from the first shuttle
to make sure there are no other faults. He should have that completed
by 06.00."

Ruane then went on to give details of the next mission and after
Alyza had given her report, it was time to put forward suggestions.
Selak could only think of two questions at the moment.
Was there any intelligent life on the planet and could they expect
any trouble from anyone.

NRPG: Phil: I thought I would post this before the story moved on.
I was going to wait until Gretchen posted and then add some more,
but thought it was best to send something and add a bit more later if
the opportunity arises. I finish working nights on Friday and will post
something longer then.

McLeary sat at his table sipping his beer. The day had passed without
much success at the computer core. The main mystery still alluded
both he and Barak. He was probably right about the aliens but that
still left the language and the core. They had found a small panel
underneath the console in the cubical but it was locked magnetically.
The tricorder could not penetrate inside the console. There had to be
some method of getting power to it. If he had to tare this one apart
he would find out what made it tick. Just then Mr. Carbo came in and
headed directly for Mick.

"Well, my friend I guess it is time for us to get acquainted. I am
Ipsc and you are McLeary. -- Waiter, bring me what he is drinking
and a second for him." He pointed to me.

Mick didnt quite know what to make of him. Fairly good looking but
very hard black eyes. He looked to be somewhere in his middle to late
fifties. About 6 feet tall he seemed to lean over some and he looked
a little tired. Mick had heard that he had run into trouble with the
Dergrads.

"I guess we will be working together on this coming mission. Have any
idea what we will be doing.?" He sat down and looked Mick directly in
the eye.

"No. All I know is that we are going to be the first to check out a
local class M, if fact, it looks as though it will be the first visit
by anyone from this station to any celestial body in this sector."
Mick couldnt hide his excitement.

"You sound like a real lifer. When did you graduate?" Ipsc said
that with some bitterness in the question. *I wonder why* Thought
Mick.

"November." Mick replied. "This is my first posting".

"Well, out here you need to keep on your toes. One moment it is dull
and quiet, the next you get hit from all sides." The waiter came up
and put the drinks down. "Put it on my tab."

"Yes Mr. Carbo" The waiter said in a monotone.

Carbo jumped up and grabbed the waiter by the shirt. "How many times
must I tell you not to call me Mr. Carbo. -- Its Ipsc or sir or
hay you but not Carbo, got it." His black eyes turned almost red with
rage.

*This guy is not all here* thought Mick. *I wonder what he is going
to be like when we are sniffing around a deserted planet.*

He regained his composure and sat down. "Sorry about that. It is a
thing with me. He took a big slug of the beer. "Your a bone hunter
huh?"

"What?" Mick was taken off guard.

"You like to look over old sites and artifacts and rummage around
grave sites and such."

"Well, if you mean I like archeology, your right. My mother was a
scientist and some of her work rubbed off on me. Otherwise I know
engineering and weapons."

"I had some engineering when I was at the Academy. In fact my first
position was in engineering." He looked down slightly as if he had
let out a major secret.

Mick would be careful here. He sensed that this man would not open up
much and seemed to be a little shy. "Interesting." Mick answered.
"It was my major so in typical Starfleet fashion I am assigned to the
furthest Starbase as the Archeologist Specialist Officer. Now who
would of thought that I would be working in my hobby and not my area
of general training."

"You complaining?" He smiled slightly as if he really understood
Micks humor.

"No, couldnt be happier. Instead of being 3rd officer on the
engineering deck I am studying alien computers in the core. What more
could an ensign want." Mick picked up is drink and saluted his new
companion.

The sat and talked on for some time.

LtCmdr Alyza gave a brief report on the readiness of the science
department. As usually, it was operating smoothing considering the
limitations of DS 101's external sensing devices and the stationary nature
of the station. Like almost all Vulcans, Alyza was nothing if not
efficient in her specialty.

She then went into the details of the planet as were currently known. "The
planet is one of 4 planets orbiting a yellow star, one not unlike the one
Earth orbits around. Little is known of the specifics of the life-forms on
the planet, other than typical class-M life-forms. No sentient life-forms
have been detected. We will have to do a more detailed scan of the planet
to learn if there are any life-forms that are on the verge of becomeing
sentient. Additionally, we need to know the habitablility of the planet
for Federation colonists. Is there eatable vegitation? What is the nature
of the vegitation as a whole, remembering that some vegitation can be
highly acidic or alkaline in nature? Are there any creatures that present
an overwhelming hazard to humanoids? How available is water, energy, etc.?
Was this planet inhabited in the past by sentient beings? These are our
major tasks. I expect that all of you will fulfill your roles most
professionally."

.....After the meeting......

Everything had been discussed, it was time to board the Bangalore and head
for the planet. Alyza was, naturally, the first one there. The rest of
those assigned to this mission boarded within the hour.

Zack sat quietly as Alyza outlined the known details about the planet.
Every now and then he would take note of your slightly rounding figure.
He bit his tongue though as the briefing continued, even though he had
reservations about taking a pregnant officer into a possibly hazardous
situation.

The mission itself seemed relatively routine, if there was such a thing in
Starfleet. Explore the planet and report the findings. *Easy enough.*

After Alyza's briefing, Ruane dismissed the group. Zack had one person to
talk to before leaving.

[SNIP]

"I'm sorry but I have to go. The mission will probably require the
services of the station's security chief."

"Why can't Velez or Seelbinder take your place on the Bangalore?"

"Because they not the CSO for this station," answered Zack.

Rissa's green form stood silently looking at him, imploring him to stay
with just her eyes.

Lithely she moved over to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. "But I
don't want you to go. This station, it's so different, frightening."

Disentangling himself from Rissa's grasp, more to put some distance
between him and her pheromones, "I know."

Reaching up he put up a hand to her head, caressing it as only he could.
"I've made arrangements so that you will be fine. Velez will be watching
this station and you like a hawk."

"But Velez isn't you..."

"I promise, I'll be back very soon."

Rissa seem to finally give in, very reluctantly though. Stepping back,
she took on that aura that Zack had only seen in her a few times since
knowing her. It was an aura of survival, the same attitude that allowed
her to survive on a starship for weeks undetected.

With both her hands in his, he pulled her closer. *Pheromones be damned.*
"I promise, I'll be back real soon."

[SNIP]

Zack made his way to the BANGALORE's docking pylon. After leaving Velez
in charge of the station's security, he had commandeered ten security
personnel from the his staff as a precaution for what every awaited the
crew on that planet.

Zack wasn't much of a fighter, but he WAS a strategist. And going into an
unknown situation with a only a science team as back up was not high on
his list of do's.

Already on the bridge was Ensign Selak making the necessary procedures for
debarking.

"Morning Lt. Hogan. Tactical is over there," helpfully suggested Selak.

"Thank you Ensign," began Zack as he moved behind his station. "I would
like to talk to you sometime about the station's defenses once we get
back. I have a few ideas that I think fall under your jurisdiction, and
would appreciate some feedback on them."

"I would be most delighted," responded Selak in a very Vulcan tone.

*Two Vulcans, a man who's hundreds of years old, and a retired SF officer.
This trip will be very interesting.*

**Scene: Selak's Quarters**

Selak packed a small duffel bag before boarding the Bangalore.
They had been informed by Alyza at the briefing that the planet
had no known sentient life, but Selak was always cautious.
He checked his modified MK 1 phaser that he kept in his boot and
he also packed two MK 2 phasers in his bag. He considered packing
a phaser rifle but decided against it. Besides there were some stored
on the ship.

**Scene USS Bangalore Bridge**

Alyza looked at the crew around her and with the last of them now
aboard, she decided to get underway.

"Take us out, Ensign." She ordered.

Selak settled into his chair and opened a channel to the station.

"USS Bangalore to DS 101. Requesting permission to leave the
station." He said.

[Permission granted Bangalore and good luck.] Surprisingly it was
Captain Ruane's voice that came back.

Selak waited for the release of the organic docking clamps and then
powered up the thrusters. The Bangalore started to move away from
DS 101 and as soon as the ship was clear, he entered the co-ordinates
for the planet.

"Course laid in Commander." He said.

"Very well, engage at warp 3 Ensign." Said Alyza.

"Warp 3 aye." Responded Selak.

The Bangalore slowly turned onto its flight path and then disappeared
into a long streak of light, as the warp drive responded.

Selak looked at the flight controls in front of him and thought there
was something not quite right. He looked around at the other Bridge
Officers and his gaze fell on Lt. Hogan. He was checking out the
weapons status of Bangalore, a job that Selak knew well and had
performed for years when he was aboard the Bird of Prey. It was then
that Selak realised the problem.

"Commander, seeing as this is the first time this crew has flown
together and speaking for myself, this is the first time I have flown
this ship. I was wondering if it would be possible to do some combat
practice? I would be fascinated to see how the Bangalore handles in a
fight." Said Selak. "It would be logical to get familiarised with her
capabilities before anything unexpected shows up." He added.

Commander Alyza considered the request for a moment. The idea
was logical, the new members of the crew could do with some
familiarisation of the Bangalore.

"Approved Ensign, but keep it simple. We have a mission to
accomplish and I would not like it to interfere with that."

"Selak to Engineering, be advised that we are about to start some
combat manoeuvres. I will advise you when they are complete.
Selak out."

[Standing by.] Came the response.

Selak started with a few standard tactical manoeuvres to get used to
the feel of the ship, it proved to be not as different as he thought it
would be. Finally he decided to try a few tricks he had learned while
serving with the Klingons.
Lt Hogan was surprised at the Vulcan's ability and range of tricks
that he was using, so much so that he was having a little trouble in
getting a lock on the targets they had deployed, but after a while his
experience started to show and he began to anticipate Selak's
manoeuvres. They started to work well as a team, the limited arc of
the Bangalore's phasers didn't seem to be much of a problem to the
two men, as target after target was hit. Even Alyza had felt a little
surprise at the ability of these two Officers. Hogan was preparing to
fire on a target before Selak had brought the ship to bear on it and
Selak seemed to be aware of where the next moving target would be
before Hogan had fired.

"Are you two have not worked together before?" Said McLeary.

Selak brought the ship back on a level flight plan, reduced speed and
turned to face him.

"Many years ago, on Earth, there was a pilot named Richthofen, he
was considered to be the best pilot ever to fly a Biplane. What you
just witnessed was an old fashioned dog fight."

"More pilots should be taught those tactics at the academy.
Sometimes people forget the old ways, as technology advances."
Added Hogan. "Well, that was fun, shall we have another go?"

Roberts emerged from the turbolift onto the bridge. He completed
some tweeting on the LCARS computer network on the ship. Hearing about the
practiced combat manuvers, he headed to the bridge to see how the crew was
faring.
Alyza turned to look at Roberts as he walked on the bridge.
"Is the computer up to your standards Lt.?", asked Alyza.
"It is now.", reesponded Roberts. "Computer efficiency at peak
performance. How goes the combat manuvers?"
"Ensign Selak and Lt. Hogan both have performed quite
satisfactorily together.", responded Alyza simply.
Roberts nodded and sat in the chair next to Alyza. Roberts brought
up some of the parameters for the survey mission. Alyza watched him
intently for a few moments bbefore speaking quietly to him.
"You seem quite intent on keeping busy since we left the station.
Is there something wrong?", asked Alyza.
"No, not really. This is the first mission where I'm first officer
on a starship. I don't want to screw this up. Captain Ruane has put alot
of faith in me to assign me this position."
""The Captain would not have given you this post if he felt you
could not perform the duties adequately. I believe it was a logical choice
to make you first officer for this misson."
Roberts smiled. "Thanks Alyza. By the way, I never did thanked you
for teaching me those Vulcan meditation techniques."
"I was unaware you were still utilizing them.", said Alyza.
"Every night. They are quite relaxing. J'nete thinks I look like
a statue she saw on Bajor one time."
"I believe I know what statue your daugther is referring to. An
interesting observation.", said Alyza.
Smiling, Roberts got up from his chair and went over to the conn
position where Selak was sitting.
"How did the ship handle during the manuvers?", asked Roberts.
"Quite well sir. The starboard thruster is a bit sluggish. Nothing
to be concerned about.", said Selak.
"Very well. Run a diagnostic to see if the problem is hardware or
software related. My modifications didn't kicked in 'till after the
manuvers were complete. If it's software hopefully the problem has been
corrected."
"Aye sir.", said Selak. "Sir, if I may ask, do you have any
knowledge of ancient Earth weapons of the twentieth century.?"
"Actually I do. Why do you ask?"
"I have of collection of weapons of various cultures, including
Earth. There are questions I have relating to them. I assumed you might
have knowledge of them since you originally came from the twentieth
century."
Roberts nodded. "Weapons were an important part during the late
twentieth century. Almost anyone could procure them through legal or
illegal means. I lived next to the city of Los Angeles."
"Isn't that the city that was submerged during an earthquake?",
asked Selak.
"Yes it was.", confirmed Roberts."That city was quite unsafe and
violent when I was living by there. Shortly after I was frozen the city
deteriorated quite rapidly. When we get back to the station I can give you
a historical briefing on any of the weapons of Earth you have from that.

Stardate: 90513.1345
Scene: USS BANGALORE

"Target acquisition in two seconds," calmly reported Zack as the target
buoy moved into position on his screen.

The entire bridge crew could feel the lag in the inertial dampeners as
Selak pulled off another impressive manuever.

The BANGALORE's dorsal phaser arc lit up as the beam of high phased energy
lanced out and struck the buoy.

Permitting himself a smile, Zack watched as the buoy's signature vanished
from his screen.

Selak leveled the ship off and returned the original heading with the
destruction of the last buoy.

Off to the side, Zack could hear McLeary's compliments and Selak's
explanation of ancient 'dogfighting' tactics. The Vulcan was a very able
pilot. Some of the moves he just pulled off with the ship seemed almost
illogical to Zack. But he reminded himself, Vulcans could see logic in
almost anything.

Getting up from his station, Zack walked over to the science console.
With the ship being closer to the planet, he hoped the sensors had been
able to pick up anything further about the system. After all, Zack was a
cautious person. He hated going into anything unprepared.

Calling up the sensor logs, Zack intently focused on the red and green
Class M planet that was their destination. Long-range sensors didn't tell
much other than what they were already aware of. Typical class M. Still
too distant to get any good readings on the life forms there.

Zack leaned back in the chair and let go of a long sigh. This was getting
him nowhere.

"Problems Lt.?" queried Roberts who had just finished his conversation
with Alyza.

"No, sir. I was just attempting to glean some more info from our sensors
on this planet."

"I've been over the long range sensor logs and the logs we've accumulated
in the past few hours and nothing came up Lt. Good luck."

Zack knew what Roberts had meant. He was far more qualified at this than
him and he had found nothing. Time to do something else.

But before leaving the science console, "Computer cycle through all
electromagnetic emissions coming from the target planet. Begin at
wavelenths of thirty cm and cycle all the way up to high energy emissions
of about one angstrom in wavelength."

The beeps of the computer alerted Zack that the sensors were configured
and ready to begin. "Begin."

Roberts simply shook his head. Having been over the logs countless times
he knew all there was to know about the planet, but was still intrigued by
the analysis Hogan requested.

"Lt. may I," Roberts stated gesturing toward the seat. Zack relinquished
the science console to his superior and stood behind him.

"Your idea is interesting Mister Hogan, but just ordering the computer to
get the sensors in the right configuration may not work. Going to such a
low energy scan is going to be difficult at this range unless we focus the
lateral arrays onto the target."

Roberts deftly brought the lateral arrays to bear and both his and Hogan's
eyes widened at what they say. A distinct peak appeared at about
twenty-five centimeters on the readout. Roberts mouth opened and then
closed as he murmured, "Radio waves..."

**Scene: Captain's Office**

Graeme walked into his office and smiled...at last the small engineering crew
of DS 101 had completed the repairs to an almost perfect replica of how they
appeared earlier...there were just a few minor differences; Graeme set to work
correcting that. He walked into the office with a large box.

"Home sweet home." He smiled as he produced a model of the USS CURIE from
his box. The CURIE, his first command, was placed to the right of his desk,
following it out of the box came a model of the USS UTOPIA and Ruane's
frieghter; the JADE. The JADE was placed on a shelf opposite the rounded door,
the UTOPIA was hung in the window against the backdrop of space. Ruane
squinted his eyes and looked at the UTOPIA from a distance, he was far enough
away that it appeared the ship was moving slowly through space keeping up with
the rotation of the command section of the station. He returned to the box a
few minutes later and produce a framed jigsaw.

The jigsaw had been created by Ruane himself, originally when he was fifteen
during a difficult phase. His development as a child was somewhat different to
that of others; his red eyes and odd characteristics scared some people, a
little miserable in mind he had created the jigsaw. Half of it was his own
face at that age; the other was a large question mark. Of course this one had
been lost during the explosion and following fire caused by Zahn Z'Dark during
his 'Bounty-Hunter' stage, one of the final signs that indicated the Rebel
Dergrad were quite happy to include others in their arguments with the
Vurtedion Federation. The replacement jigsaw served to remind Ruane of the
original, but he knew that most of the emotions that it signified had burnt in
the blaze...imitations could never conjour up the same kind of emotions as an
original piece of art. Things just didn't work that way.

Graeme looked around for the perfect place to hang the framed jigsaw, it took
him some time until he eventually decided to place it above the desk, behind
where he would sit. With that done he proceeded to bring out the smaller,
personal items and the 'business' things that every commanding officer would
have on their desks doing nothing. As he placed the last item down he tapped
his communicator.

"Transporter room 1, beam the object in please."

[Aye sir. Energising.] The familiar crystal chiming of the
transporter filled the room with sound before disippating. In the place of the
light that had accompanied it stood an oak hat stand. Graeme smiled before
bringing out a further item from the box. A sand coloured hat with a blue
ribbon, he hung it on the hat stand before finally placing the box on the floor
and sitting in his new chair.

"Home sweet home." He said once more. He looked out of the window and past
the model of the USS UTOPIA; he wondered how the crew of the BANGALORE and the
CURIE were fairing out in the Amgine Sector, and he wondered when he would hear
from the HECTOR...the ship hadn't been heard of since indicating it would enter
a large 'Dyson-Sphere' like object two sectors away...
