**Scene: Beneath the planet surface**

Alyza was supporting Selak as he walked. He was only just able to
stand and each step was slow. Suddenly a reflection of light caught
her attention and she instinctively made for cover.
Someone with a torch was coming down the tunnel from behind them.

"ALYZA, SELAK" Shouted Roberts, down the tunnels.

"OVER HERE" Alyza responded.

A look of relief came over Roberts face. "We were lucky to find you,
we must have been directly over your heads when our Tricorder picked
up a massive energy discharge. We guessed that it must be something to
do with you, so decided to investigate it." Said Roberts.

"That was Selak's phaser rifle, He's over here injured."

"We will get him out."

The Security guard that was with Roberts picked Selak up and started
back the way they had come.

"We found the hole you came through and have managed to dig it out
large enough to climb out of safely." Continued Roberts.

"We could not do that from below as it would have resulted in more of
the sand falling on top of us." Alyza commented.

After about 10 minuets, they had managed to get back on the surface of
the planet.

The medical technician examined Selak, who was now drifting in and out
of consciousness. "His condition is stable, however, I would like to
get him back to the ship as soon as possible. Especially if I am to
prevent heavy scarring of the skin tissues."

"There are a number of static generators placed all over the planet.
We have found one about a kilometre away and were able to determine
the location of the central control point about 20km away."
Said Roberts.

"If we get back to that generator and disable it, we may create a
window in the interference big enough to contact the ship and beam
Selak back to the Bangalore." Said Alyza.

"Worth a try. If they are connected in the form of a grid, then it
should work." Commented McLeary.

**20 mins later**

**Scene: The static generator**

Roberts and McLeary worked on the generator for about 5 minuets. The
fact that it was dark made the job harder. Finally they had
successfully disabled it.

"Okay Commander, we should have your window now." Said McLeary.

"Alyza to Bangalore, come in."

[Hogan here, It's nice to here you again. What is your status.]

"Selak has been injured, the medical technician will be beaming up
with him."

[Understood. Be advised that a stolen Marquis ship has landed about
20km from your present position.]

"That confirms our earlier findings on the location of the control
point for the static generators. Could you also beam down some
supplies suitable for desert conditions. Alyza out."

Selak and the medical technician disappeared in a column of blue
energy, to be replaced almost immediately by a number of canisters
containing survival equipment for their 20km march to the camp.
The party divided up the supplies and set off. So far the creatures
they could hear had not come near enough to be seen, but they were
all aware of the fact that they were being watched by unseen eyes.

**Scene: Planet, Camp Red**

The American Indian looked at his control panel for the static
generators and turned to the captain of the STARLIGHT INTRUDER.
"One of the generators has failed again, it is all the sand clogging
them up."

The ship's captain looked at the red warning light on the panel.
"Wait a minute, didn't you say that a Federation ship was on it's way
here?"

The Indian thought for a moment. "I think we had better get ready for
company."

**2 hours later**

**Scene USS Bangalore sickbay**

Hogan entered the sickbay to get an update on Selak's condition and
found him sat up and seemingly fully recovered. He had a small scar
above his right eye, but other than that, had no other indications of
his burns.

"Well how do you feel then Selak?" He asked.

"Well enough to beam back down and continue with my duties, sir."

Hogan looked at the Medical technician in a questioning manner.

"I would like him to get some rest, but there is no reason why he
should not be able to return to duty after that." The technician
answered.

Hogan turned back to Selak. "I have already had a full report as to
the events so far, I think you should get some rest and then beam back
down later. The away team have a long march ahead of them, so there
would not be much for you to do until morning anyway."

Selak started to protest.

"That's an order Ensign." Said Hogan, with a smile.

Scene: USS BANGALORE sickbay---->bridge

Hogan felt lots better now that contact had been restablished with the
away team. As the sickbay doors closed, he let a sigh escape him after
checking to make sure he was alone in the corridor. After all, as CO of
the BANGALORE now, he didn't want the others to think he was nervous.

His brief thoughts on command style were interuppted by the chirp of his
comm badge. ["Ensign Wilkes to Lt. Hogan."]

Slapping his badge, Hogan acknowledged the call. "Hogan here."

["Sir a squadron of Maquis raiders have just entered the system at low
warp. We've been detected and they are on an intercept course."]

Zack could feel his pulse skip a few beats. *A squadron! Heavens about
us.*

"Hogan to sickbay," said Zack as he ran for the turbolift. "Have Ensign
Selak report to the bridge on the double!"

Zack had read the officers service jacket thoroughly. Right now, if a
fight was going to erupt, Selak's place was on the bridge at the NAV
station.

Within seconds, Zack found himself standing before the command chair,
staring at the viewscreen at the small hawkish shapes moving towards the
BANGALORE.

"Distance to Maquis vessels?" he queried.

"Only a few hundred thousand kilometers now sir," reported the ensign at
tactical.

Zack bit his lower lip for a second. "Any response on hailing them?"

"Negative, sir."

The nervous voice of the ensign at ops shouted out, "Sir, there arming
their weapons!"

"I suggest you calm yourself. Red alert people."
Zack always envisioned himself saying those words with emotion,
practically yelling them out. But now, he barely whispered the words.
Nevertheless, the results were the same.

His command chair systems panel lit up showing the powering up of the
weapons as the bridge lights went from standard illumination to battle
lighting with the flashing red from the wall panels.

"Sir, four vessels on a direct intercept course with weapons charged.
Tactical analysis indicates that the combined firepower of the four
vessels is equivalent to our own."

Zack smiled and whispered more to himself than anyone else, "Then we'll
just have to change the rules."

The bridge aft doors opened to admit Selak who promptly took his place at
Navigation.

"You up to this ensign," asked Zack.

"Aye, sir."

"Good, full impulse directly into the planetary atmosphere."

Selak, without hesitation carried out the order. The rest of the bridge
staff lacked Selak's control though and gave each other a quizzical look.

"Ensign Wilkes, try hailing the vessels again. Let's try and convince
them of the error of their ways," ordered Hogan.

"Comm line open, sir," reported the ensign.

"Maquis vessels, this is the USS BANGALORE..." Before Zack could utter
anything else the ship shook from a low energy phaser blast.

"Status," yelled Hogan onced the ship righted itself and the inertial
dampeners came up to 100% again.

"Direct hit on port shields, low energy two second burst of phased energy.
That's the best they can do, no photon torpedos detected on their
vessels," reported Wilkes at tactical.

*Excellent,* thought Zack, "still four of 'em though.*

"Selak keep us steady through the upper atmosphere. Wilkes, take out some
of those attackers, please."

The BANGALORE's phasers lanced out from the dorsal stripe hitting one of
the raiders. Four seconds later, its port wing stabilizer rippped off and
the ship spiraled into an explosion.

The BANGALORE rocked again from the combined fire of the three other
vessels.

Calmly Selak reported that the enemy ships were moving into a pincer
attack formation, in an attempt to overpower the BANGALORE.

"Sir, I will counter their attack plan with a DELTA-VI manuever," proposed
Selak.

Zack immediately gave the go ahead as another blast sent sparks flying
from one of the science consoles at the rear of the bridge.

The BANGALORE banked to starboard hard as it bucked violently in the
planetary atmosphere. The starship was practically sideways now in the
upper atmosphere, actually acting as an airdam for the three raiders now
following it down.

Zack could hear the ship's structure groaning as the atmosphere became
thicker. "Mr. Wilkes, cease fire. All available power to the SIF. Mr.
Selak, keep it up."

Already, Zack had guessed what Selak was planning. He thought it was an
interesting variation on a DELTA-VI manuever, and hoped to all that was
sacred that it worked.

The BANGALORE bucked more violently as it pushed more and more air in
front of it's seemingly suicidal plunge into the planet. The raiders
stayed close, following the now fiery red starship. Suddenly one the
BANGALORE's forward thrusters came to life, throwing the ship 's nose
upwards.

The pilot of the lead raider seemed confused momentarily, before it dawned
on him what was happening. The BANGALORE tilted up at a crazy angle
before his eyes, before the rear thrusters spewed forth. The starship
shot up and away from the raiders and their downward plunge.

Lacking the power of a starship, the pilot of the lead raider looked
at his forward viewport grimly as the massive wall of air, held at bay by
the presence of the BANGALORE in front of him came rushing directly at his
smaller ship.

Back on the bridge of the BANGALORE, Zack gripped his seat for all he was
worth as the inertial dampeners were strained to the max to keep up with
Selak's manuever. Turning to his chair console, Zack looked with
satisfaction as two of the raiders collided with each other due to the
atmospheric disturbance caused by the BANGALORE.

The final raider lost control of his ship as it spiraled down for a
crashlanding on the surface.

Shortly thereafter, the BANGALORE was back in orbit mending its wounds.
"Mister, Selak, excellent work. As soon as you feal ready, we'll beam you
down to surface to rejoin the away team. Also, Mister Wilkes, please
notify the away team of what has just transpired up here."

Zack leaned back in the seat as things began to settle down or so he
hoped.

Selak stood with a contented smile on his face. "Lt Hogan, when we get
back to DS 101 I would be grateful if you could remind me to contact
Starfleet engineering and inform them that the technical manual for
this class of ship is inaccurate."

"What do you mean Selak." Said Zack, slightly confused.

"According to the ship's specifications, the manoeuvre I just
accomplished should have resulted in the ship being torn apart in the
atmosphere."

"You mean......" Zack looked at the Vulcan very closely. Selak was
probably the best person in Starfleet when it came to winding somebody
up, only because it was something Vulcans never indulged in. "You are
joking, right?" *of cause he was,* he thought.

"Lt Hogan, I would like to try and modify some phasers before I beam
back down. I have a theory that might work and would like your
assistance." Said Selak.

"Glad to help, what's your idea." Zack had been worried at the thought
of the away team being unarmed and was extremely interested in hearing
a way of overcoming the problem, especially after the events that had
just taken place.

"The problem is the phased energy is being disrupted before it can
leave the prefire chamber, causing an explosion as the energy is
released. If we can create an energy dampening field around the
chamber, then the phaser should fire." Said Selak.

"It would not take long before the beam lost it's cohesion and started
to dissipate though." Commented Zack.

"Based on the readings we took on the planet, I would say no more than
2 metres. After that, the energy would have little force left."

"2 meters is not what I would call a decent range. Still it's better
than nothing. Lets get down to Engineering and run some tests."

NRPG: Just a short post, I wanted to establish that, assuming all goes
well, Selak will beam back down at about the time the away team reach
the camp. (Hopefully armed.)
Also, as the away team move away from the damaged static generator,
communications should slowly get worse again.

He moved across the sand with a stealth that contradicted his actual
size and shape. His black leathery skin left a swirling pattern behind
him, as his sharp front claws dragged him through the sand. Millennia
ago, his kind had hunted in packs, but over time the food supply had
dwindled to the extent that now only a few of his kind remained. Those
that were left fought each other for what scraps they could pick up.
However, things were now beginning to change.
A new scent had been detected and whilst usually this new prey had
protected itself inside shelters when the darkness came, for the first
time there was a new group out in the desert unprotected.
Old, long forgotten instincts were beginning to surface in each of
them and the creatures were herding together in preparation for a
banquet.

Selak entered main engineering with Lt. Hogan behind him. The lighting
had faded to a red and Hi'Wee was attempting to get used to the small
space in engineering, compared to the Heracles.

Selak approached Hi'Wee, "We need to adjust the prefiring chamber to
compensate--"

Hi'Wee interupted him, "Ahh, yes, the phasers. I've been working on
that."

Hi'Wee turned to the screen infront of him. A large diagram of a phaser
rifle IX lite up the room. An image of a quantum resolutor appeared
near the pre-fire chamber.

"We should be able to adjust the phaser to fire from a range of 1-5
meters, pending how well the quantum resolutor adjusts to the changing
frequencies."

"That's even better than we'd hoped for," Hogan said.

"Well, that's because we're not adjusting the frequency by hand. If we
make one adjustment, it will hold steady at 2 meters, a Q.R. will hold
it in a moving range from 1-5 meters tops. Which would you prefer to
use sir?" Hi'Wee said.

"...Go with the Quantum Resolutor." Hogan sighed in his mind *Hope this
works...*

Selak looked at his Tricorder, as the two security guards went through
a well rehearsed drill of sweeping the horizon to check for any

"The Commander and the rest of the away team are not in sensor range."
He did not feel the need to add the fact that the range was not
particularly far.

"I want to catch them up before they reach the camp, are you two up to

"Ready when you are sir." Said the young Human female with a smile.

As the three set off after the away team, Selak wondered if her

going to get a chance to test their phasers before this mission was

The creatures had all gathered together now. Their prey had moved up
to a ridge that would make it harder to pick them off, but they had
not eaten meat in this quantity for a very long time and nothing was
going to stop them tonight. Slowly they started to encroach on the
Humanoids. Silently they started to encircle the hill. Their bloated
bodies were almost invisible in the darkness. When they had the hill
completely surrounded, they stopped their approach. It had been a long
time since they attacked like this and they were a little unsure as
how to proceed, So they waited for one of their number to come forward
to lead the assault. Their prey was going nowhere. They had all night.

Alyza sensed them, waiting in the darkness. She forced herself to
meditate, to focus her mind, to prepare herself for what was to come.

The creatures are about 3 feet long with a fat black body, tapering
down into its tail. They have short front legs with sharp front
claws, that they use to pull themselves along as well as fight with.
(Do you have Boggles in America? If not then imagine a small Jabba the
Hut that crawls on it's belly.) Their movement is similar to a lizard
and is quite fast despite their bulk. They fight by raising their
bodies up and clawing. (Which means they can't fight and move at the
same time.) They are not particularly tough, a good comparison would
be something like a Hunting dog.

Have fun :)

All of the away team was armed with rocks, as the phasers were just about
useless to them. Still, they had their phasers ready incase they needed to
use one as a grenade of sorts, but putting it on overload. The tension was
high as the team waited for the creatures to advance.

"I almost wish they would get it over with", said McLeary.

"I wish I had not been included on the landing team," said Ip'sc, "some
protection Starfleet offers to civilians!"

"They are coming, be ready" anounced Alyza. "There are many of them and
they are all around us, advancing slowly towards our position."

Alyza put a phaser on overload and threw it just before the advancing
creatures. It exploded moments later. The remaining creatures pauses,
uncertain now that 3 of their number were gone. Still, they were hungry,
so the advance continued. The smell of the dead creatures drew still more
creatures from nearby. The away team did not have enough phasers to
destroy them all, yet they had to reduce their number before they started
up the ridge. In succession, the other phasers were thrown until they were
unarmed. The number of the creatures was now down to 6. The creatures
pause to feast on the small remains of the dead...but a phaser on overload
did not leave much. They were still hungry.

The night advanced, and so did the 6 creatures, starting up the ridge.
They were pelted by rocks, which slowed, but did not stop the advance.
They were upon the meger defensive barracades when day dawned, despite all
of the stones rained upon their bodies.

They were hungry.

They pulled upon the barracades of loose stone with their claws, topling
those they touched. The away team formed a circle, back to back. The
creatures were more sure of themselves now, and advanced rapidly....

SCENE: Planet's surface
SD: 90605.1930

The away team formed a circle as the creatures approached the
makeshift barrier. The barrier quickly fell as the remaining half dozen
creatures pulled the small wall of large pebbles down.

Ip'sc broke the circle and retreated into the center. The
Starfleet officers quickly filled in the hole presented by Ip'sc's absence,
and one snidely commented, "civilians."

Ignoring the remark and the unspoken accusations, Ip'sc dug into
his field pack. As a civilian, he had taken advantage of not being
officially bound by Starfleet regulations and had packed a few 'extras'
with him.

First, he removed his cane from the pack. Although he was mostly
healed from his ordeal with the Dergrad, he had brought the cane in case
the long trek through the sand proved to be too taxing. Next, from his
tunic, he produced four small cylinders, which vaguely resembled over-sized
birthday candles.

Ip'sc ripped the sleeve of his tunic and used a shard of fabric to
tie two of the cylinders to the end of his cane. He then extended the cane
to its full length of one meter and crawled out of the circle.

One of the security specialists grabbed him by the pants to stop
him. "Let go, you idiot," complained Ip'sc, and to his surprise, the guard
did.

"Mr. Ip'sc. Return to the circle," calmly ordered Alyza. "The
odds of our survival are highest in this configuration."

"Just wait a second, Commander," answered Ip'sc as he approached
the nearest creature. The creature, sensing danger, paused in its approach
up the slight bank. But seeing no further explosions nearby, and
anticipating an imminent meal, it continued its ascent at an even faster
clip. Ip'sc appeared to yank on the ends of the two candles and met the
creature head on.

	"Ip'sc, be careful," warned Alyza.

The creature halted its advance and pulled itself upright. It
lunged forward towards Ip'sc, its front claws swinging down, trying to grab
the prey in front of it. Ip'sc, still crawling, merely ducked out of the
claws' range, then jabbed his cane into the creature's face. The creature
pulled its claws back towards its face, trying to get the annoying point of
Ip'sc's cane away. Before it managed to do that, however, the two candles
exploded at the end of the cane, ripping off about a third of the
creature's head.

The creature squealed and jumped backwards, then fell over on its
side, convulsed twice, then slowly relaxed as its nervous system shut down.
Its hunting companions paused, seeing yet another of its number killed.

Ip'sc crawled back to the circle, his cane now somewhat shorter
than a meter. He poked it into the sand as he reclaimed his spot in the
circle. "I have two more sticks, Commander. That should be able to take
out one more if someone can figure out how to deliver the punch. If not,
I'll just have to get intimate with one of the bastards."

"Give them to me, Mr. Ip'sc. If it is required, I will 'get
intimate' with one of the creatures.

Ip'sc shook his head. "Sorry, Commander. You don't know how to
light them." Ip'sc reached back into his pack then under his left pant
cuff. He emerged with two knives and held one to each side--one for each
security officer flanking him. They both hesitated. "Go on, take them.
You two are presumably the most skilled in hand to hand. You'll give us
the best chance."

The first guard looked at Alyza, who simply nodded. They both took
the proffered knives. Ip'sc picked up his cane, and the group waited.

Before he died, Roberts had to satisfy his curiosity. "How did you
get explosives aboard the ship, Ip'sc?"

The civilian smiled. "I didn't. Isn't it scary to know that
things we think of as safe and harmless can do so much damage?"

The explanation was cut short as the creatures, once again, began
advancing.

Silently, Roberts cursed himself for not being adept at physical combat,

"Alyza.", said Roberts. "If it comes down to a physical brawl with

"You've got two kids you're carrying. I'm not going to let them be

Before Alyza could respond a creature lunged towards her
unexpectedly. None were prepared for the burst of speed from the creature.
It rose up and prepared to make a swipe with its claws at Alyza. Just as
she prepared to defend herself, Alyza felt two hands grab her arms. She
was then twirled around. By the time she could orient herself, realzing
she was in the same place Roberts once stood, she turned to see the
creature slash Roberts right side. No muffle or scream came from Roberts.
He looked and saw most of his arm's flesh was gone, bone exposed from his
shoulder on down. He looked at the creature, as it prepared to have a meal
at last. Just as it was about to kill him, a knife came from behind
Roberts, striking the creature in the eye. It roared in pain and shrunk
back instantly. Seeing he wasn't gooing to die by the creature, Roberts
smiled briefly before collapsing. He didn't realize some of his flesh was
also ripped away on his right rib cage and leg.
While the creature provided a momentary distraction, Alyza and a
security officer grabbed Roberts and hauled him within the circle. None
could spare the chance to see if they could help Roberts. All they could
do was shield him and hope his wounds were not fatal.
