Dana's deceased father had left her and her snob mother virtually
bankrupt. To survive, the Widow DeWitt Bukater arranged for Dana to
marry a rich, young alien who could support them both, despite his
lack of appreciation for science. The prospect of becoming some ugly
alien's wife drove Dana to desperate measures.
