The SDF-1, or Macross, is in essence the true star of Robotech. I mean, without the SDF-1, would there even be Robotech or Macross? After the SDF-1 crash landed on earth, it was totally redesigned by Earth scientists to fit in normal height standards. Even in the 10 years reconstructioning the ship, scientists and engineers were never able to explore the whole thing. If so, they would have discovered Zor's hidden protoculture factory. The SDF-1 is also equipped with a device that allows it to perform a space-fold operation. This allows the SDF-1 to travel a great distance through hyper space.
In its belly, the 70,000 survivors of Macross Island were able to rebuild there city and resume a "normal" life. Apartments, stores, restaurants, cafes, movie theaters, parks, and even a concert hall could be found in New Macross. Robotech engineers even took it as far as to create a blue sky inside the ship for its residents!
The SDF-1 had 2 modes of operation, attack mode and cruiser mode. In attack mode the the main gun could be fired. With one energy blast, the main guns were able to destroy thousands of targets at time. In cruiser mode the main gun could not be fired. The city inside the ship gets pretty tangled up when the SDF-1 goes through its transformation from cruiser mode to attack mode. In order to keep the city intact, the SDf-1 is often in cruiser, until attacked. The SDF-1 also has another line of defense, when in attack mode, it can use the pin-point barrier system to absorb enemy energy blasts. The pin-point system is later modified as the crew learn more about this mysterious ship.
