> "Perhaps it's not marriage then," Sandra wondered out loud. "What are thumbs > used for? Hitchhiking is one; the Romans used them to judge people; in some > cultures, it is even used as an obscenity, much like the middle finger is > for us. But how can they be related?"

Eithne nodded in the back. . . she had been thinking the same thing about the thumbs. . . she didn't see hitchhiking as something which could have relevance, but judgement, or obscenity. . . they were possibilities. She made a mental note to look into that, and thought of something else she'd like to know.

Clearing her throat and projecting slightly (she chuckled inwardly - and they said those drama classes in college would have no bearing on her life. . . Ha!) she spoke up. "Were any of the girls. . . extraordinary in any way?"

Cunningham cocked his head. "What do you mean?"

"Anything which would make them the objects of contempt - exceeding popular, bright, pretty. . . maybe had boyfriends who were any of those?"

After looking through papers for a moment, he shrugged. "No mention is made of it, but that doesn't mean that they weren't."

Eithne nodded - something to ask their friends about. Well, that was fine with her. . . people, she could deal with. . . standing around in offices with UD's, and AD's, and actual D's. . . that made her slightly nervous.

Going over what he'd said once more to see if she had any further comments, Eithne suddenly remembered that the flight wasn't until 4 tomarrow. . . She smiled slightly. That meant that she'd be able to sleep! Perhaps the Powers that Be didn't hate her nearly as much as she'd thought. . .
