He watched the throng, and the chaotic activity of the crime scene,
shocked that work of any sort could be achieved in this sort of mayhem.
But, he was not surprised at the sight in front of him. It was
reminiscent of any crime scene, anywhere in this large expansive country.
The one difference being the group of FBI agents who had arrived. He'd
been given specific instructions by his superior. This group had shown
promise, and had been selected to form a unit specifically. And, it was
his task to ensure that their progress was not impeded. His superior was
highly aware of the threats by other organisations to shut down the
X-Files Division. There were those that would benefit greatly from such
a move. But there was also a select group who were determined that the
process should continue. Determined that those who would cover such
cases and phenomena up not succeed, and that was where he came into
things.
Jacob Martin had worked his way up through the ranks of officialdom,
working steadfastly and hard to please those he was serving, but also
discovering the complicated nature of working in politics. He'd been
fortunate to prove himself early, and progressed quickly through the
office he had been working in. His work came to the attention of many
members of the Senate, mainly because he worked to find out the truth on
any matter. There had been incidents throughout his career, but he'd
avoided the scandal that most senior public servants got caught in. And
so it was that he had become a senior assistant to the particular senator
he worked for. More importantly, he'd become the senator's only
confidante. He had also become the Senator's record keeper. And as
such, he knew of the existance of the group, and the organisation which
worked to shut the X-Files Division down. He followed the progress of
all of the Unit's, with strict instructions to assist if possible, but
without detection by the rival organisation. And so it was that he was
here, watching this chaotic crime scene. Watching Unit Delta.
Considering when to contact them, and who to contact them through. And
as he watched the professionalism of the Unit, he made his decision, then
faded away from the chaos to make his call. No need for them to be
scared by knowing he was close by. No need to complicate what was
already developing into a complicated case.
Sitting down on a park bench, across town from the chaos of the crime
scene, he took a deep breath and dialed the number. His position gave
him access to the numbers of all of the Bureau's operatives, and as such,
it was a simple matter to obtain the number he seeked. His position also
ensured that his call could not be traced, using methods not even
available to the most senior of Bureau officials. Not even the Bureau's
Director had access to the technology which ensured his call's safety.
The phone rung for a few moments, and was then answered, with the
accompanying cacophany of sound in the background.
"Kelly!"
"Agent Kelly, you don't know me, but I know of you and your team. The
case the Bureau has given you is a complicated one, and by no means
easily solved. But, you have a powerful ally who has provided
information which can help you now, and will provide assistance in the
future. You and I need to meet. There is a small playground a block
from your hotel. Meet me there at 6 am, and come alone. If you bring
any of your team, I will not turn up. I will know they are there, no
matter what you try. Consider this a message. You have a friend
watching over your team who wishes to assist. The details I will
provide for you will assist in your solving this case."
Jacob closed the connection before she could answer. He knew of Sari and
her past. She'd be there, but she'd be wary. It was going to be tough
to earn her trust, but it was something he had to do. He was there to
help, but he also had to protect their lives, his life and the identities
of those who he worked for. That was imperative!
