8:00 P.M.
A cafe in the motel
Eithne slipped into the end of the booth, rubbing the bridge of her
nose distractedly and only half paying attention to the conversation, as
they set about filling Damian in on The Situation So Far, only jumping
into to add an appropriate comment at various times. A waitress with
dyed blond hair and neon pink fingernails (Eithne would have been okay
with those two facts, but when combined with the facts that she called
everyone "hon", it grated terribly on her already thinned nerves) took
the various orders, and in a short amount of time they were all sitting,
sipping steaming mugs of hot liquid and mulling over the day (Eithne's
was a cup of black, decaff coffee.)
"So. Tomorrow." She unconsciously twirled a lock of hair around her
index finger.
"Tomorrow," stated Kate, "we talk to the Amazing Dr. Burrell, Mystery
Psychology Professor."
"And to Jennifer.."
"Jennifer whom was tied and locked in a closet?" Damian more stated than
asked the question, as if he were simply trying to get what he already
knew straight, and Sandra nodded, stating,
"She's in the hospital now, under guard, so she'll hopefully be
protected until we get there..."
"And of course we'll have to talk to Megan," stated Flynn, in a tone of
voice that indicated he had no more of a desire to be alone with the
girl than Eithne or Kate did.
Eithne's lips curled up just a little in an easily unnoticeable hint of
a smile. "Let's do that last."
"Let's do that *together*," said Kate, "strength in numbers, you know."
Damian laughed aloud. "Don't you think that's a *little* ridiculous -
*six* FBI agents to interview *one* girl?"
"Fine," Eithne said, looking directly at him with an entirely serious
expression, "*you* talk to her." She paused for a moment. "Besides, I'm
not certain if the six agents are to deal with *her*, or to make sure
one of us doesn't accidentally shoot her in the leg.."
"Or somewhere else," muttered Kate under her breath. Sandra and Flynn
chuckled, and Eithne's ice blue eyes sparkled mischievously.
"We should also try to get one of the other girls away from Megan, and
speak to them alone. Without the pressure of Ms. Miller directly in
front of them, someone might be able to convince them to talk..."
Eithne rubbed her temples. "Well, whatever it is we're going to do
Tomorrow, I suppose we really ought to get some sleep tonight in order
to do it..."
The rest of them nodded, and finished primarily in silence, though every
now and again someone would break in with a comment. They stood when
finished, and walked up to their adjoining rooms, most of them falling
asleep rather quickly, due to the combination of the day's events, and
their history of sleep deprivation in the previous days.
[DAY 2 - 6:30 A.M. - Eithne, Sandra, & Kate's room in the Motel]
Eithne woke up a small bit earlier than she would have cared to the
next morning, thanks to her own rather annoying internal clock, which
was set permanently for 6:30. She briefly contemplated pretending she
was still asleep, but then realized that there was no way she was ever
going to be able to pull that off - once she was up, she was up, and
that's all there was to it.
She sighed to herself, and determined that she might as well get up,
shower, and get dressed. By seven, she was standing in the middle of the
motel room in a suit, trying with all her patience to brush the tangle
of things atop her head that liked to consider themselves curls,
grumbling to herself about how she hated having curly hair, and by eight
the six agents were once again assembled in the cafe, eating breakfast
and sipping various liquids.
"So who gets to go see Burrell?" She asked offhandedly.
Sandra directed her comments at Kate. "Of course you should the first
person, since it would be rather odd for you to get an appointment and
then send someone else.. as to anyone else.."
