[6:42PM, Delta Pi house]
Bursting through the open doorway, Kate immediately took in the sight of Flynn kneeling on the floor beside Brian, and noted the knife protruding from the younger man’s chest, in the vicinity of the heart. Not enough blood - direct hit. She quickly scanned the room for the source of the scream, but there was no one else there. She moved to the window. No one outside, either.
"What happened here," Sandra said, joining Flynn near the body and checking for a pulse. With a shake of her head, she confirmed what they all suspected.
"He came after Megan," Flynn said. "He stabbed himself."
"Who screamed," Kate asked.
Flynn shook his head and indicated a spot over his shoulder. "It sounded like it came from over there." He glanced over his shoulder at a blank wall. "The next room, maybe."
Kate nodded and headed for the door, while Sandra picked up her cell phone to recall the crime lab technicians to the scene. Eithne appeared in the doorway just as Kate reached it. Kate recruited her assistance and together they went down the hall to the next door.
They positioned themselves on either side of the door. Kate knocked. "FBI. Is anyone in there," she called. There was no response. She tried the door knob. It was unlocked. She pushed the door open, waited a few seconds, then led the way in with her gun in hand.
The lights were off, but the curtains were open, allowing in enough light to see by. They found themselves in a dormitory type room very much like the one they had just left, except this one was obviously unoccupied at the moment. No sheets on the bed, no books on the desk, no personal items of any kind on display. There was a large cardboard box sitting in one corner, its contents overflowing. There was a large pink teddy bear on the top of the pile. When Eithne turned on the lights, Kate noticed a rust colored stain on the bear’s paw.
"Looks like blood," Kate said, picking up the toy. "Its been here a while."
Eithne stepped up for a closer look. "What’s this," she asked, brushing aside a bit of fur to reveal a tiny gold pendant stitched with bright green thread to the bear’s chest. On it was etched some sort of symbol. "Any idea what that might mean?"
Kate shook her head. "If you can tell me, we’ll both know."
Just then, they heard a shuffling sound, accompanied by a low moan, coming from the closet.
