Newt
***
[Day 2, 6:30PM, the cabins]
First a plane crash .. now a fire .. Newt was beginning to suspect someone didn't like them. He'd know that being in the FBI could be dangerous .. but this was certainly more then he expected. Shooting at bad guys was one thing. Someone purposely and with a great deal of evil calculation trying to kill you .. that was something else entirely. It began to sink in how great the scope of these seemingly frivolous investigations might actually be!
It was a sobering thought and not one he would ever write home about. As it was his parents weren't too keen on the idea of him being in the FBI in the first place. And since he wasn't about to quit .. there was no sense in adding to their worries.
And then there was the kid. Anyone who would kidnap a child and take him away from his family was the lowest of the low. At least the brief glance they'd had of the little one showed he was alive. Newt silently prayed he'd still be when they finally got to him.
He fumbled idly with a stray piece of the building that he'd picked up on their way back to the cabin. It wasn't part of the actual structure, that he could tell .. just some sort of soft, black metal shard. Pliable enough for him to play with and mold a bit with his hand. Yet he'd hit it with the sole of his shoe without leaving a dent. He couldn't for the life of him figure out what the heck it was that could be molded with the hands but not dent when hit with the something else.
Hmm, if he could find a hammer .. His mind was going over all the different kinds of things he could test on it when Flynn called him, "Hey Newt, we're heading for the café. Coming?"
"Yeah, I'll be right there." He looked back at the shard and then threw it into a pocket of his suitcase before joining the others.
[6:50PM, Dinner at Cafe]
>"I know what you mean, I've had the creeps ever since I got here." Sharlyn
>said.
>Kate remained quiet.
"That was the strangest building. Definitely creepy," Newt agreed. "It's almost to bad it's gone .."
"Oh no!" Sharlyn shivered, "I'm glad it's gone .."
Newt shrugged, "But if we could have figured it out .. It's like that shard I found .. Strangest thing I've ever seen."
"Shard?" September asked.
Flynn nodded, "Yeah, something Newt's been playing with since we left the sight of the explosion."
Newt began to tell them about the soft black metal when the waitress came up and handed them their bill then rushed off again.
"Not even a smile .." Dinah commented.
"And we aren't even halfway finished!" Newt complained. "And I think I'd like some dessert."
[7:30PM, Leaving the Café]
"I'd like to see that shard of yours, Newt," September said.
He nodded, "It's pretty cool! You know I could coil it with my hands with just a little bit of manipulating .. but then I slammed it with my shoe .." he pantomimed the action, then spread his hands in disbelief, ".. and .. nothing .. Not even a mark!"
"You all check into that, I'm going to quick-change my clothes and then go for a jog," Kate told them.
They all nodded as Newt continued to tell them what he'd done with this remarkable shard he'd found.
[8:15PM, Newt and Flynn's Cabin]
The girls had all gone to their cabin's for showers, so Newt and Flynn had done the same. They'd flipped for it, and Newt had won the first shower. He'd showered quickly, saving as much hot-water as he could for his cabinmate and now stood in front of the mirror with a towel around his hips, while Flynn took his shower.
He combed his short hair neatly and turned to his suitcase to get some clean underwear. But when he opened it, he found it empty. "What the .." he looked around the room then back to the empty suitcase.
He frowned, "Now this isn't funny." He began pulling drawers open, searching for his clothes.. but they were nowhere to be found.
He moved to the door of the bathroom and pounded on the door. "Where are my clothes?"
"..what?.." Came Flynn's muffled reply.
"My clothes! What did you do with my clothes?"
The water in the shower stopped and a few minutes later Flynn came out with a towel around his waist, as he used another to dry his head and shoulders, "What did you ask?"
"My clothes," Newt said impatiently, "What did you do with my clothes!"
"You left them on the bed, I didn't touch them."
"Not the dirty ones. The clothes in my suitcase .. it's empty."
"What?" Flynn moved into the main room, "I didn't do anything with them." He moved quickly to his suitcase and was relieved to find his clothes intact. He turned to Newt, "Honestly .. I didn't do anything with them."
Flynn moved over to Newt suitcase and said, "Look this isn't even your suitcase .."
"What?" Newt moved beside him and sure enough the Tag that Flynn held out for him to see was blank. The one on Newts suitcase had 'Samuel Prescott' written in a neat feminine script .. with 'X's' through it and a clumsy, 'NEWT' scrawled below it. This one had nothing.
"What the heck .."
There was a knock at the door, "Hey you guys done .. we want to see Newt's metal shard."
Suddenly Newt's eyes widened, "The shard! I put it in my suitcase!" he quickly fumbled through the identical pocket of the empty suitcase and of course come up with nothing.
"You don't suppose someone took my suitcase because of the shard?"
Flynn shrugged, "Well do you really think it was your clothes?"
The knocking became more insistent, "Flynn? Newt? Are you in there?"
"Just a minute!" Flynn called to them then turned to Newt, "Guess you'll have to wear the dirty for a while."
"A while!"
Flynn grinned, "Don't panic there's a K-Mart about 30 minute drive from the Park. I saw it as we drove in from the airport. We'll get you some clean clothes."
"Great .." Newt said unhappily, thinking about his already nearly maxed out credit card and the $37.82 balance in his checking account ..
