"There's nothing left for us here...."
Those words could almost apply to her situation now as the hour to her
meeting with OPR approached. Lisa thought of what happened when they
returned, how Agents Ian, Ormonde, and Smith had been reassigned to
different divisions. At the moment, only Emily Hanson and Vynce Edwards were
upstairs in Tango's office filling out the various paperwork while Lisa
ventured to Josh's office. Taking a deep breath, Lisa turned the knob to the
outer door and entered.
JEH Building, 10:30 am - Tango's Office
Vynce Edwards sat at a desk filling out papers for what had seemed like too
many hours to think of now, the thoughts of the unfinished assignment back
in Oregon still fresh in his mind and very much threatening to interrupt his
concentration. He chewed the top of his pen as he took it in turns to write
and then pause to think...going on like this for several minutes. Emily
noticed this habit start to grow from across the room from where she sat and
came over to confront Agent Edwards, obviously aware that Vynce was just as
frustrated as everybody else about the unfinished case.
"You ok Agent Edwards? You look like you're a million miles away...still
thinking about the case?" Emily asked, taking time out herself from the
paperwork that seemd to dominate proceedings at this current point in time.
Vynce looked up, smiled a little and replied, scratching his unshaved chin.
"You could say that...apart from catching bullets and going in unarmed it
seems I was destined to end up the injured one, then getting called back
here soon after all this...just why I wanted to be assigned to the X-Files
division! Full of logic don't you think?"
Emily chuckled at Agent Edwards humour, but understood his reasoning, for
she too was annoyed regarding the sudden withdrawal. She sat on the desk
next to Agent Edwards and eyed the paperwork he had compiled so far. Vynce
grabbed his near empty packet of smokes and lit up a cigarette as Emily
shook her head in protest of Vynce's actions.
"A stress relief? You know, they'll kill you...hey I wonder what's going to
happen with unit Tango now? Reckon we'll see an improvement here? It does
seem like Tango are cursed sometimes. So, only you and I here for the
moment...think you can handle that for a while?" Emily mocked, nudging the
arm of Vynce, as he made a grab for the small pile of increasing paperwork.
"I'm sure I can Agent Hanson...regarding these things, I'm trying to
quit...the withdrawal of the case came at a bad time I guess! And I do agree
with your asumption that Tango is somewhat cursed...hope we can get this
unit on the move soon, maybe we'll get to complete some cases too!" Vynce
replied sarcastically, resting his smoke on the side of the ashtray as he
gulped at a glass of water. "Wonder who we'll get as Ian, Ormonde and
Smith's replacements, not that it bothers me...just getting this damn unit
off the ground good and proper" Vynce concluded.
Emily Hanson and Vynce Edwards had known each other only since the start of
the unfinished case and hadn't really had the chance to talk to each other
as friends, yet they took this chance in the office to do so, seeming to
almost rely on each other to stay sain for they were the only Agents left in
unit Tango at present. Emily noticed the the sling pulled taught across
Vynce's shoulder, occassionaly giving the English Agent moments of
uncomfortable pain. Without being asked or a moment of hesitation, Emily
adjusted the sling strap to Agent Edwards satisfaction.
"There you go! How is the arm?" Emily spoke, sympathy sounding in her voice
for once.
"Thank you...it's getting better I guess, still hurts like mad from time to
time...and this damn sling is killing me! Guess you think I must be mad
for going back into that building unarmed? Reckon I saved your butts
momentarily" Vynce smiled again, sitting back in his chair.
"Yeah? What did you do? Oh, sorry I forgot, you took the bullets for us!
Stupid, but brave I suppose" Emily mocked him even more, smiling as Vynce
spun round in his chair with the look of disbelief slapped across his
bristly face. Vynce stubbed his smoke out and finished his glass of water,
before putting his paperwork away inside his folder.
"That's me done for a while...hungry?" Vynce asked Emily, aware that his
stomach was indeed in need of filling. Emily grinned and nodded in
agreement, then slid down from the desk she was sitting on and both Agents
headed for the office door......
