Velva married very young. By her own words, they
were poor but happy in their family, love, and
Christian values. Many of these are expressed
in a book of poems by Velva of which the webmaster
has a copy..
Velva worked for the State Division of Forestry
manning a fire tower on Fisher's Peak and later
as a ranger at Cumberland Knob Visitor's Center.
Before Arthur's death they would winter in
California because of his health. Velva drove
the camper back and forth. She was a resident of
Waddell Nursing Home in Galax, VA, for several
years before her death at 92 years of age.
Nothing is known about Arthur.
Arthur and Velva's children number eleven but their
names and birth dates are not currently known. Velva's
obituarly listed the following children surviving her:
1. Mattie Loree (17-Jun-1925), who is married to Ed, of Hillsville,
2. Virginia Dare (30-May-1927), who is married to Odie,
3. Dorothy Louise (15-Apr-1929), who is married to L.D.,
4. Shirley Lila Geraldine (25-Apr-1931), who is married to Garnett, of Cherry Valley, CA,
5. Thomas "Sonny" Eugene (21-Apr-1933),Pat who is married to Sylvia, of Sweet Home, OR,
6. Billy Grey (19-May-1935), who is married to Shelby, of Galax,
7. Clarence Lee (5-Aug-1937), who is married to Barbara, of West Jefferson, NC,
8. James Walter (27-Aug-1939), who is married to Joan, of Ennice, NC,
9. Arthur "Snooky" Glenn (9-May-1942), who is married to Faye
10. Pasty Lou (1-Nov-1944), who is married to Brad,
11. Betty Jeanette (23-Feb-1947).
Velva is buried at Snow Hill Baptist Church.
