GO BACK!
*The scene remains nothing. A white slate. A voice calls to you, bringing a small sense of euphoria as you realize that your television set is indeed working properly and not broken.*
Voice, "Pardon my theatrics... but until I have proven that this reality as we know it or as I may know it exists then I will not return the image of my dimly lit living room."
Voice, "Of course this all matters not if you do not happen to exist in which I would then be talking to myself. This camera that I see with my eyes in front of me may not exist."
Voice, "But why would I say such a thing? It's ludicrous, of course the camera exists! It's right in front of me; I can see it with my own two eyes."
Voice, "You could see it too had I had a second camera at my disposal in order to film the existence of this camera and allow you to bear witness to this supposed fact."
Voice, "Why do I doubt my senses?"
Voice, "Simple."
Voice, "Human senses, if such a thing happens to exist, can be easily deceived. An example of this sort of deception would of course be Andy Gorgadore's Pangaea Powers."
Voice, "However, should you still not be convinced allow me to provide you some visual stimuli to illustrate to you just how deceptive our senses can be."
*A single image now replaces the endless sea of white to which your eyes had been accosted with moments ago. This image is now of two opposite yet symmetrical geometric shapes.*
*The Doctor's voice begins to narrate over the image as he tries to provide context for this image's intrusion upon your vision.*
Voice, "What do you see?"
Voice, "Is it a vase in the center? Maybe a trophy?"
Voice, "Or do you see two faces looking at each other?"
Voice, "What do your senses tell you? What is it? Two faces? Can it be a vase? Or could it be both at once?"
Voice, "This image is a fairly famous as well as this particular piece."
*The image is replaced by another, this one has color yet it still remains quite primitive when compared to the seamlessly flowing images of video to which we are accustomed on today's television.*
*Placebo continues his line of questioning.*
Voice, "Although this piece takes a little bit more imagination... take a moment."
Voice, "Do you see an attractive young woman in a fur coat & necklace looking away from you? She thinks she's too good for you doesn't she... with her 'I don't need to look at you attitude'."
Voice, "Or do you see an old woman, her mouth is the 'necklace' you thought was around the neck of that young lady. But now you see it open slightly allowing her to breathe. Her eyes sag. Her nose is gigantic and her head covered in a white hood."
Voice, "Which is it? Vase or Face? Young Maiden or Old Hag? What do your senses tell you?"
Voice, "They conFLICT!"
Voice, "They deCEIVE!"
Voice, "How can I trust such unreliable things such as my senses to prove that I exist?"
Voice, "I need more!"
Voice, "But of course..."
*Spoken with a distinct French accent.*
Voice, "...I am not the only one to ever ponder these thoughts... it was at this line of thought that the great philosopher Rene Decartes realized he had proved he existed all a long."
Voice, "Although our senses cannot be trusted we have proved our existence already. Do you know how?"
Voice, "You'll feel silly."
Voice, "It's because we are thinking."
Voice, "I think, therefore I am', that was Rene Decartes' revelation during his Meditations on First Philosophy which he contemplated while a soldier in the French army. Decartes realized that the mere fact that he was actually debating his existence proved his existence a reality."
Voice, "Congratulations... we all exist, we are all thinking things."
*With that revelation under control and all doubt shed from our existence we are once more plunged into the darkness of the Doctor's living room within the Andorran Consulate. color is also restored.*
