Subject: Area 51 (a.k.a. Dreamland and Groom Dry Lake)
Location: Nevada desert, northwest of Las Vegas
Type: Government Coverup

On the southern edge of Nevada is a place whose existence, until a few years ago, the Air Force and the United States government refused to acknowledge. The place was a dry lake bed on the map, just outside the boundaries of the Nellis AFB. Those who watched the skies, however, knew that something was out there.

In the past few years, Area 51 (or Dreamland, or Groom Dry Lake, as it is sometimes known), has gone from relative obscurity to a cult-like status. It is a Mecca to UFOlogists, a place where perhaps the holy grail of alien contact may sit forever out of reach. Stories abound about the skies over Area 51, and the strange lights which are seen darting around the night. These lights move with a speed and agility impossible for known conventional aircraft.

It is the secrecy surrounding the facility which has helped to foster much of the interest in the area. In 1994, Freedom Ridge (a favored spot for watching the light shows) was closed to the public after the lands were bought up by the United States government. Far from deterring sightseers, the additional secrecy has made Area 51 even more interesting.

There are those who say the Air Force (in conjunction with a host of black-ops government agencies) are studying the remains of crashed extra-terrestrial ships at Area 51. Some believe that by reverse-engineering the alien technology, our government is hoping to reproduce the technology and harness it for our own purposes. Some say that recent breakthroughs such as fiber optics and stealth technology may have started in reverse engineering.
