Buffy sat on a tombstone in the Sunnydale cemetery, extremely bored. "Huh," she said. "Big bad Buffy all ready to kill Vampires. I was there, where were you?"
"Right here." Buffy spun, but she wasn't fast enough. The Vampire that had snuck up from behind threw himself at her and struck her full on.
Buffy fell to the ground, the air knocked out of her, her arms trapped beneath her. She struggled, but she was effectively pinned.
"You know," the Vampire said. "Angel will be really pissed if I kill you. But I've always liked Spike better and, well, in for a penny, in for a pound."
Buffy strained against the weight of her Undead assailant, but he hit her. Hard. "Say goodnight Gracie." He opened his mouth and prepared to drink her. And disintegrated.
"Goodnight Gracie."
Buffy rolled over, gasping for breath. Then gasped in surprise. "What are you doing here?"
"What am I doing here?" her savior laughed. "I'm saving your ass!" He extended his hand, offering to help her stand.
"It's good to see you again Buffy." he smiled.
Buffy lay for a moment, before reluctantly taking his hand. "Yeah," she said. "You too, Pike."
Oz sat on a bench outside the school, pondering life, the universe, and everything.
"Okay," he said to himself. "First, Cordelia and Xander hate each other, now they, um, don't. Then, Angel loves Buffy, but now he wants to kill her and every one she knows." He thought about it for a moment. "Makes sense to me."
"Hey Oz!" Willow called.
Willow never failed to cheer Oz up. But then, he'd never really been depressed anyway. The closest he could think of to being out of the mellow state of mind he was always in, was when he'd found out he was a Werewolf.
He suddenly wondered how his baby cousin had become one. He'd have to bring it up next time he saw his aunt and uncle.
"Hey Willow," Oz said. "What's up?"
"Oh nothing out of the ordinary." Willow said. "Which is to say, no end of the world prophecies or pop quizzes."
"That's good." Oz said absently.
"What is it?" Willow asked, following his gaze.
"There's a James Dean lookalike across the street." Oz told her. "He's been hanging out, watching the school since I've been out here."
"Have you ever seen him before?" Willow asked, seeing him immediately. He was seated on a motorcycle, in the shade of some trees.
"Nope." Oz said.
At that moment, Buffy came out the main entrance of the school. The man on the cycle got off and started towards her.
Buffy stopped, looked uncertain, then waited for him.
"Hey Buffy." the man said.
"Hi Pike." Buffy said quietly.
"I get the impression you're not exactly thrilled to see me." Pike said.
"What's going on?" whispered Oz.
"I don't know," Willow said. "Maybe they knew each other in L.A."
"Look, Pike," Buffy explained. "My experience in L.A., those past few weeks, when we knew each other, were not a happy time for me."
"We shouldn't be watching this." Willow said.
"You're right." Oz agreed. "It's none of our business." Neither of them moved.
Pike raised an eyebrow at Buffy's last comment.
"Don't get me wrong," Buffy went on hurriedly. "The part about knowing you wasn't bad, just that well, you're,"
"A reminder you don't need." Pike finished for her. There was hurt in his eyes, but also; "I understand." he said, turning. "Sorry to have dredged up bad memories."
Buffy struggled with herself, finally coming to a decision. "Pike wait!" she called. He turned, waiting. "Don't go." she smiled slightly. "It, would be great seeing you again. For a few days." she added firmly. She would not fall back in love with him. She would not. Of this she was determined.
"So who is this guy?" Xander asked. He, Oz, Cordelia, Willow and Giles sat in the library.
"Some old boyfriend I think." Willow told him.
"Indeed." Giles said, holding an open book. "According to Merrick's diary, Pike was a boy Buffy saved from Vampires on one of her first patrols. They later became involved, though Merrick was dead by then."
"So what happened?" Cordelia asked. She'd long ago come to the decision that Buffy have been one of the popular girls at her previous school, in fact, she had seen it right from the start, it was only her association with Willow, Xander and Jesse that made her shun the girl.
"Well from what I was able to find out from various sources, Pike was cited as an accomplice in her arson of the school Gym, and in fact he was there, attending the dance with Buffy. When Buffy was expelled, she broke it off with him, and he sort of dropped out of sight."
"Until now." Oz said. "Didn't the last old boyfriend that showed up turn out to be bad or something?"
"Yeah." Xander confirmed.
It was at that moment that Buffy entered. All eyes turned to her, looking at the Slayer inquisitively.
"What?" she asked.
"I'm telling you pet," Spike promised. "You'll love it."
"But Spike," Drucilla complained. "It's a love story."
"Dru," Spike said. "It's the Titanic. Mass death and despair. The proving of just how puny humans really are. Remember how you loved reading the papers when it happened?"
"Besides," Spike thought. "Anything to get you away from Angel."
He wheeled his chair into the dark theater. The coming attractions had started already. It was an adaptation of The Man in The Iron Mask. Spike decided he liked the evil king. "The next time there are rioters, shoot them." he quoted. "Heh, I like that. Not all humans are that bad I suppose. Just need their soul removed."
"Spike," Drucilla whispered urgently. "Look who's here."
Spike looked at what she was looking at. "Oh bloody Hell." he muttered.
"Leonard De Capri is so cute." Cordelia sighed.
"Thanks Cordelia," Xander said. "You really know how to make a guy feel special on a date."
"God himself could not sink this ship." the actor on the screen insisted.
"Oops," Oz whispered. "Now we know who's fault it was."
Willow giggled into her hand.
Buffy sat next to Pike, acutely aware of his closeness. "God," she thought. "Why did he have to come here? Why now of all times?"
"This must be a new experience for you," Buffy muttered. "Paying to see a movie and all that.
Pike merely grinned. He was concentrating on the movie.
"Look," Spike growled into the phone. "I don't care if there's a Tales From the Crypt marathon on, just get everyone available to the movie theater. Now."
Buffy and her friends left the theater, each of them, even Cordelia, profoundly effected by the movie.
"That was so," Xander searched for the right word. "Depressing."
"Yeah," Willow said. "But it was so sweet too."
"Ah don't worry about Xander," Buffy said. "He's still dealing with the fact that he cried."
"Hey," Xander said. "Those were not tears, I just, well, I...okay I cried. You'd have to be a robot or a Vampire not to cry at that movie."
Spike glowered at his men, who'd just arrived at the theater. "Well it's about bloody time." Spike growled. "They've left already."
The Vampires looked sheepish.
"The movie was three bleedin' hours long!" Spike shouted. "Where the Bloody Hell were you?!"
"Pike," Buffy asked, as she walked him to the hotel he was staying at. "Why did you come here?"
"I don't suppose you'll buy the `I wanted to see you again` riff."
"No."
"All right, well, I did want to see you again, even though I knew it would be hard for you. But-"
"Well," a sinister voice called out. "Pike's found himself a lady friend!"
Buffy and Pike turned. "Oh," Buffy said. "I guess they would be the other reason you came." Behind them stood ten Vampires. Buffy could swear she'd seen them somewhere before.
"Weren't they at the dance?" she asked, remembering the night she'd burned down the gym.
"That's them." Pike said. "They got out in time, there used to be more of them, but I've been killing them off one at a time."
"Hey," the leader called. "Enough talking amongst yourselves!" The huge group sauntered towards them.
"I've never seen coordinated sauntering before." Buffy grinned.
"Yeah, they're a troupe of dancers that Lothos and Amilyn recruited." Pike explained.
"We finally caught up with you," the leader grinned as they reached the two mortals. "And now, you're gonna-" Then he took a closer look at Buffy. "Hey, don't I know you from somewhere?"
"Could be," Buffy admitted. "Here, maybe this will jog your memory." A whip of her arm brought the stake concealed in her sleeve into her hand. Before the head Vampire could react, Buffy drove the shaft of wood into his heart.
"Oh my God!" another Vamp, this one with a discernible lisp and high pitched voice cried. "She killed Kenny! You bastards!"
Buffy couldn't take it any more, she broke up, laughing hysterically. These had to be the silliest Vampires she'd ever dealt with. They even watched South Park. Not that she could really blame them she supposed.
Her laughing broke off when a fist slammed into her stomach. Before she knew what was happening, she and Pike had been captured.
"You were right Sam," the one holding Pike said. "Distraction works great!"
"I told you sweetie," the one with the lisp, Sam, said. "And now look, we've got the Slayer!"
Clapping interrupted the Vamps celebration. "Very nice," a chillingly familiar voice called from the darkness. "Madame Bloodsucker found himself a winning strategy."
All present turned to face the intruder. Angel.
"But I'm afraid I'm going to have to insist you let the girl and her friend go.
"Who the hell are you?" Sam demanded, striding forward.
Without answering, Angel grabbed Sam by the head. "This," he said to the rest. "Is Sam." He ripped off Sam's head. "This is Sam dead. Any questions?"
The Vamps fled, leaving Pike and Buffy behind.
"Is this another Bad Guy?" Pike asked.
"Angel?" Buffy asked, unsure. Why had he just saved her?
"You didn't think I was gonna let anyone else kill you do you?" Angel grinned. "Whose the new boy in your life Buffy, I like his taste in clothes."
"Yeah Pike," Buffy said. "This is a bad guy. Run. Don't look back, I'll catch up to you later."
Pike hesitated only a second. Then he remembered that Buffy was more than capable of taking care of herself. He ran.
"Smart boy." Angel laughed. He and Buffy stood facing each other on the empty street.
"What do you want Angel?" Buffy asked suspiciously.
Angel merely laughed and faded back into the shadows. His voice echoed through the air. "Soon."
The next day, Buffy stood by Pike as he boarded his motorcycle.
"So where you headed next?" Buffy asked him.
"Well," Pike said thoughtfully. "Your bud Xander gave me this Hunter calling card, since I was doing it anyway, I thought I'd look 'em up."
"Pike, you know what I said, about you being a reminder I didn't need?"
"Yeah?"
"Forget it. You're one of the few things I don't regret about what happened."
Pike smiled. "See ya 'round Buffy."
"You've got my number." Almost as an after thought, Buffy kissed him. And for a moment, a flicker of the old flame they had sparked to life. And then it was gone.
Buffy stood there, watching him ride away. She stood for a long time after he was gone, thinking, and wishing.
The End
