Staked Shield

This typed of shield usually comes only in the large size category. Although some have been custom made in smaller versions. In all respects it is the same as any other large shield except that at it's base there is a 1 to 2 foot stake jutting out toward the ground. The stakes location makes it too awkward to be used as an effective weapon. It does however allow the bearer to jab the point into the ground, leaving it free standing, and giving the bearer the opportunity to stoop behind it with hands free...i.e. to prepare a greek fire, spell components, or to use a bow. While the shield will stand up to most missile fire such as arrows, darts, sling stones, and thrown axes and daggers it will topple with a successful strike from a larger projectile such as a rock from a giant. A successful hit to the shield from a hand held weapon in melee is also likely to bring it down. The purpose for this shield is primarily to deflect missile attacks.
